🚗How cool is AAC? One of our friends was telling us what shape to make the magic track by using his talker to say “make heart.”

💚AAC is Augmentative and Alternative Communication— meaning forms of communication that aid in or replace verbal speech. AAC is a tool to help individuals with their effective communication with all communication partners in all settings. AAC looks different for every person! It ranges from picture symbols, to speech generating buttons, to high-tech speech generating devices, and so much more!!

✨Several of our friends at Therapy Junction use AAC— and they continue to impress us DAILY!!!

💥Therapy Tip Thursday💥

Listening to your child’s sensory needs and providing appropriate replacements is important in the needs of your child being met and them staying safe. For example: if your child is chewing on their toy and you tell them to stop, provide them a replacement item they CAN chew (ex: chew tube, teether, chewy necklace, etc.) Another example: if your child is jumping off the couch and you tell them to stop, show them an area where they CAN jump (ex: indoor small trampoline, crash pad, outside, etc.)

Oftentimes, chewing, jumping, spinning, running, etc. are ways for our children to regulate their bodies and have their sensory needs met— even if they are not able to articulate why they are engaging in those behaviors or activities. Regulation drives communication and overall functioning. A lot of children have sensory needs, especially children who are neurodiverse, and some have challenges with expressing those needs. It is vital for sensory needs to be met, which is why replacement behaviors and safe outlets are so important!

Children who “sensory seek” look for ways and opportunities in their environment for their sensory needs to be met— these are not always the safest options, just what is available (ex: chewing on their toys or jumping off furniture). Providing SAFE and appropriate replacement behaviors allow for our children to have their sensory needs met while also staying safe and following expectations!

🫧Therapy Toy Tuesday🫧

SLP Carlee thinks bubbles are a fantastic activity for therapy and at home!!

Bubbles are great for:
•Targeting language
•Building connection
•Reinforcement
•Gaining attention
•Breathing and sensory regulation
•AND having fun!

Tips for ways to play with bubbles at home that encourages learning:
•Target words like: up, pop, down, big, little, more, play, open, go, stop, all done, etc.
•Take turns with who gets to blow the bubbles using “my turn”/“your turn”
•Use bubbles as reinforcement when doing a non-preferred activity or task
•When upset blowing bubbles is a great way to get a child to practice deep breaths and regulating their body
•Talk about body parts: pop the bubbles with your hand, finger, foot, head, nose, etc.
•Use characters around your home to “eat” the bubbles

Recommendations:
Fubbles are our FAVORITE because they are “no spill.” If a client or child flips the container over, or if it flips in our bags, the bubbles don’t spill! GAME CHANGER!!🫧

💥Therapy Tip Thursday💥

Making non-preferred activities and tasks FUN is a great way to help your child complete the task. For example, if your child is having a hard time with cleaning up: try to “race” your child to see who can clean up the fastest, challenge them to clean up without using their hands, or put the pieces on your head and “sneeze” them into the basket. Another example: if your child is working on writing letters, instead of using paper give them the option of using chalk outside or a white board.

When activities have fun components in them, our children and clients are more likely to be intrinsically motivated to participate and compete the task! This is a win/win situation because the child is having fun AND the task is getting completed.
