As pediatricians, our goal is to provide education to caregivers to ensure your children are safe and healthy. October marks the start of RSV season and we are so thankful to have the ability to offer the RSV monoclonal antibody known as Beyfortus to our patients.

Illness: Respiratory Syncytial Virus
Type of infection: Virus

Spread: Through respiratory secretions from close contact with infected people. It can also be spread from touching a contaminated object, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.

Highest risk for complications: Young infants (premature infants at increased risk), adults over 50, individuals with chronic medical conditions (especially heart or lung disease).

Symptoms: Coughing, sneezing, wheezing, fast breathing, low oxygen levels, apnea in infants (periods when they stop breathing)

Risks: About 7 out of 10 infants will get RSV by 1 year of age. Babies between 6 weeks and 6 months of age are the most likely to be hospitalized. Between 100-300 children die each year from RSV and its complications.

Treatment: Supportive care (oxygen, respiratory support)

Prevention: For infants there are two methods of protection available, both through passive immunization. One is by a monoclonal antibody (Beyfortus) given to the baby. The second is by vaccination of the mother between weeks 32 through 36 weeks gestation with Abrysvo.

Eligibility for RSV monoclonal antibody: Infants under 8 months of age entering their first RSV season (Oct 1st-March 31st) and infants between 8 months to 19 months of age entering their second RSV season with history of chronic lung disease or who are immunocompromised.

As pediatricians, our goal is to provide education to caregivers to ensure your children are safe and healthy. Please follow along as we continue our series about vaccine preventable diseases.

Illness: Hepatitis B

Type of infection: Virus

Spread: Most often spread from contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person, newborns by an infected mother, or by sexual contact.

The virus can survive on surfaces longer than most viruses - up to 7 days. Because of this, casual contact can cause infection through sharing washcloths or razors. Infection has been known to occur through contact sports. The virus is also found in low levels in saliva.

People at Highest Risk: Newborns of mothers infected with the virus, healthcare workers, and IV drug users

Symptoms: Can vary depending on stage of illness from fever, dark urine, and abdominal pain to jaundice and an enlarged liver. Some people do not have symptoms of acute infection and may not realize they are infected until they develop liver disease or failure. About 1 in 2 people with hepatitis B do not know they are infected.

Risks: Severe liver disease or liver cancer.

Treatment: There is no treatment for acute hepatitis B. There are some medications to help with chronic hepatitis B but there is currently no cure for this infection.

Prevention: Hepatitis B vaccine
