🌈 Today is National Rainbow Baby Day 🌈

A rainbow baby is a child born after the loss of a pregnancy, stillbirth, or infant loss; bringing hope after heartbreak, much like a rainbow follows a storm.

We honor the strength of families who have walked this journey, remember the little ones gone too soon, and celebrate the joy that rainbow babies bring. 💕🫶

🥛 Thinking about trying raw (unpasteurized) milk? Here’s what you should know!

Raw milk might sound “natural,” but it can carry harmful bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter. Pasteurization kills those germs without changing the taste or nutrition.

Recently in Florida, 21 people (including 6 kids under the age of 10) got sick after drinking raw milk from the same farm. Some ended up in the hospital with serious complications.

We all want to make healthy choices—just make sure they’re safe, too. When in doubt, pasteurized is the way to go. ✅

As pediatricians, our goal is to provide education to caregivers to ensure your children are safe and healthy. Please follow along as we continue our series about vaccine preventable diseases.

Illness: Haemophilus Influenzae Type B (Hib)

📍 Type of infection: Bacterial

📍 Spread: Close contact with infected person. This bacteria is commonly found lining the surface of the nose of back of the throat.

📍 Symptoms: Stiff neck, headache, fever, breathing difficulty, drowsiness, coma. Disease can progress to coma or death quickly.

📍 Risks: Prior to the Hib vaccine, Hib was by far the most common cause of meningitis in children (infecting around 20,000 children every year in the US). Risks of infection include meningitis, sepsis (bloodstream infection), epiglottis (swelling of airway), pneumonia, and cellulitis (skin infection, most commonly of the side of the cheek), death. Some children recover from disease but can be left permanently paralyzed, deaf, blind or mentally impaired.

📍 Treatment: Rapid initiation of antibiotics such as Ceftriaxone. Unfortunately there are increasing rates of antibiotic resistant strains.

📍 Prevention: Hib vaccine
