Long post ahead. I've been meaning to share with my patients what has been going on with me recently. I've had a lot of doctor's appointments and I've missed work. Back in September, I was diagnosed with having BRCA-2 mutation. What this means is that one of my genes that should be able to fight cancer in my body can't. I have 4 main types of cancer that I'm at a higher risk for: Breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and skin cancer. That's why on Halloween I had a complete hysterectomy, removing my tubes and ovaries. I was then told by my breast and plastic surgeon that in order to have a prophylactic mastectomy with reconstruction, I would have to lose at least 35lbs. I have lost 42lbs so far.
Today was my first MRI, looking at my pancreas. I was really scared, and today was a very hard day for me. But, I handled the scan, and will learn results in about 1/2 a month.
My next major surgery will be most likely in June, and then I'll be out for June and July to recover. The reason why I'm doing all of this is because I want to live. I want to be around for my family. I want to do everything in my power, under God's will, to survive.

Happy National Women Physician's Day! It is possible to be a mother and a doctor at the same time. I gave birth to Preston in 4th year of medical school, Flynn in my 2nd year of residency, Ian in my 2nd year at Transcend Medical Group, and Emryn in my 4th year at TMG.
