Congratulations to DAISY Nurse Leader honoree Kelly Zinc, RN!

Kelly was nominated due to her efforts in supporting her team as an interim manager for the IU Health Paoli Hospital Infusion team and Visiting Specialist Clinic. Here are just a few things her nominators had to say about her:
• “She listens to our questions and issues, and she either helps us come up with a solution or gives a solution to the question or issue at hand.”
• “Kelly stays optimistic and enthusiastic even when delivering bad or stressful news. She truly cares so much about each individual and puts 100% effort into her team.”
• “Her loving and compassionate nature comes out vividly when she is caring for patients.”

Heart, skill and dedication—these words are commonly used to describe nurses, and one nurse in Paoli has dedicated her skill and heart to nursing for 50 years.

“I started as a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home my junior year in high school and graduated from licensed practical nurse school in February 1979,” shares Deb Nelson, LPN, who celebrated her 25th year with IU Health in 2025.

Her time with the system began in Paoli’s Intensive Care Unit. She’s also been part of the Med-Surg, visiting specialist clinic, walk-in and primary care teams. Outside of Paoli, she’s worked with the primary care teams in Mitchel and French Lick.

Deb currently works in the Primary Care – Paoli office with Holly Terrell, NP.

“She has worked in various departments at Paoli and is a true asset to IU Health,” says Brandy Ream, Primary Care – Paoli manager. “She is a strong leader, works diligently to provide the best patient care and support her provider.”

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month!

Colon cancer is expected to affect more than 108,000 people in the U.S. in 2026—nearly every case beginning as a silent, slow‑growing polyp.

We spoke with gastroenterologist Bret Spier, MD, about why colonoscopies matter. “Early detection is critical because colon polyps typically cause no symptoms,” he explains.

A colonoscopy allows physicians to find and remove polyps before they ever have the chance to turn into cancer. At‑home stool and blood tests can be helpful, but they can’t detect polyps the way a colonoscopy can.

Most adults should begin screening at 45, and some may need it earlier based on family history or other risk factors.

A single screening can make a life‑saving difference. Don’t wait to prioritize your colon health.

More than 150,000 people are hospitalized with pneumonia each year, leading to roughly 41,000 deaths from the disease or related complications. The good news is there’s a vaccine designed to help reduce these numbers.

“Studies have shown that getting the pneumonia vaccine helps to prevent the most common type of bacterial pneumonia in many adults and this leads to less hospitalizations, missed days of work and death due to the infection,” says IU Health South Region emergency medicine provider, Robert (Bob) Adams, DO.

Learn more in the Q&A with Dr. Adams below:

IU Health South Region emergency physician Robert Adams, DO, shares information on how the pneumococcal vaccine can help reduce the risk of pneumonia.
