PSA: from a doctor who actually cares about your health, your insurance premiums and YOU getting the care you paid for.
I know that most of you opted for your particular health insurance back in October/November whenever your open enrollment was . Please pay careful attention to the following terms:

DEDUCTIBLE: most important number since your insurance will not pay a single penny to your doctor/hospital till you pay this amount out of pocket first. Many of us private practitioners have started collecting unmet deductibles at the time of the visit because we’ve lost a lot of money by patients stiffing us when we bill them later. The lower your monthly premiums, the higher your deductible. Please pay attention to the small print.

COINSURANCE: This is a percentage that you need to pay the doctor and your insurance pays the rest. Usually 20%, but varies.

COPAY: the fixed amount you pay your doctor at every visit as part of cost sharing with your insurance. This is absorbed into the deductible. For example, let’s say you have a $1000 deductible, $10 copay and 20% coinsurance. Let’s say I charge you $350 for a cardiologist visit, EKG and echo with immediate results. You pay me $350 upfront since you have a $1000 deductible that you opted for when you chose your insurance. It includes your copay and coinsurance since you still have not satisfied your $1000 deductible. Copays and coinsurance only kick in once you’ve satisfied your deductible.

Instead of being transparent with these things, most hospitals and big health care systems will just charge you the copay at the visit and send you a bill weeks later. And send you to collections if you don’t pay up.

At the Children’s Center for Holistic Heart Health, we are price-transparent. We tell you what you owe when you come in instead of sending you surprise bills weeks later. We strongly believe in price transparency and charge you the exact rates your particular insurance would pay us for the services.

The reason I think that price transparency is so important is because our insurance system is all smokes and mirrors- most people don’t understand their medical bills. We want to be absolutely transparent and charge you exactly what your insurance has contracted with us if you haven’t satisfied your deductible. And we want to provide the best care for each and every patient. Thank you.

Today’s success story: this young man is down 75lb over 1 year on treatment at our weight management center! He feels like a new person and is delighted to run and play with his two little girls! I’m sooo proud of him!

I first met this macho man as a 20 week old fetus in his mother’s womb. Diagnosed with a complex heart defect, he underwent open heart surgery at 2 months of age. Here he is today, almost 10, showing off his muscles to me and sassing me throughout the visit 😘😘😘😘😘 I feel blessed everyday taking care of my kids!
