Behind every policy conversation is a real family caring for a loved one with intellectual and developmental disabilities asking: Who will care for my loved one in the future?

If you’re a parent or caregiver of a child with special needs, this recent CBS News New York story will likely hit a chord. Emmy Award-winning reporter Jennifer Bisram TV Reporter interviewed New Concepts for Living CEO Steve Setteducati and resident Spencer Schiavo with his legal guardian/stepmother Julie Skolnik in "The Cost of Caregiving" series, where they talked about what happens when children turn 21 and age out of school services. That “transition cliff” is a feeling many caregivers have discussed experiencing while struggling to plan for their futures, knowing their that their loved ones will need support for the rest of their lives.
• Navigating waitlists and limited services
• Finding safe, supportive housing
• Worrying about who will care for their child in the years ahead

You are not alone in this journey. NCFL is offers support to its clients and advocates for excellence in IDD adult care in New Jersey and beyond.

Federal law entitles students with disabilities to special education services until they turn 21. What happens next is what many caregivers call "the transition cliff." CBS News New York's Jennifer Bisram reports.
