When Andrea Martinez walked into Mayra Adame's hospital room at Elkhart General Hospital, car seat in hand, she was ready to meet the newest addition to a family she'd come to love. When Andrea asked about the baby's name, Mayra smiled.
She had named her daughter Andrea.
"I was absolutely speechless. I literally felt like I couldn't talk," Andrea remembers. "I have always joked around with friends and family that they should name their babies Andrea like me, but never thought it would really happen."
For a year, Andrea had been more than just Mayra's community health worker at Beacon. She'd shown up during one of the most difficult times in Mayra's life — not just for scheduled appointments, but in the quiet, hard moments. "Since day one, I felt like someone was listening to me and my needs and not judging me," Mayra says. "Andrea didn't only do her job, she became my friend that I could rely on."
Now, baby Andrea carries the name of the woman who believed in her mother when she needed it most. "This is what the role means to me," Andrea says. "It's about building trust, connection and being that additional support for mothers and their families. Our connection is so special because we show up together with our hearts."
