Dear Legislator,
I want to make you aware of upcoming legislation that poses a significant threat to the state's burgeoning h**p industry. SB1413/HB1376 by Representative William Lamberth (R-Portland) and Senator Richard Briggs (R-Knoxville) is proposing to ban h**p and certain cannabinoids after legalizing them in 2023. SB1413/HB1376 proposes to ban THCa flower, ban all online sales, move all regulation under the Alcohol Beverage Commission (ABC), among other things.
This maneuver is also brought by the liquor industry as a greedy attempt to make up for lost revenue lost by the onset of popular legal h**p products. This is not about protecting consumers like proponents say; it’s about capitalizing on the h**p industry to offset losses in alcohol sales and padding bureaucratic pockets off the backs of everyday hard-working Tennesseans
In addition, Senator Ferrell Haile (R-Gallatin) and Rep. Ed Butler (R-Rickman) proposed a bill (SB1236/HB1148) brought by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to ban THCa and THCp, despite previous public outcry that successfully halted similar efforts. This alarming trend highlights a disturbing disregard for the voices of Tennessee small businesses, farmers and constituents.
In addition, the h**p industry comprises over 2,600 small businesses creating thousands of jobs and is estimated to generate $280-$560 million in annual sales. That is $33,600,000 in generated small business tax revenue.
In support of the h**p industry, the Tennessee Growers Coalition is proud to announce the introduction of its own legislation SB1007/HB1243 sponsored by Senator Page Walley (R-Savannah) and Representative Chris Hurt (R-Halls). This bill aims to clarify and strengthen the existing smokable h**p laws established in 2019, ensuring that the rights of h**p growers and businesses are protected.
