Let’s break down this hot topic when working with D/HH children. 🚨

What is the Ling-Madell-Hewitt sound test (LMH)?

The LMH sound test is a behavioral listening check that can assist with detecting changes in a child’s hearing. This is used with children that use amplification. This was previously referred to as the Ling 6. Recently, 4 additional sounds were added to cover additional frequencies.

10 sounds used in the sound check are ...
🐍 - sss
🐮 - ooo
🍦 - mmm
✈️ - ah
🐭 - eee
💤 - shh
🐝 - zzz
🐶 - hhh
🐸 - jjj
👎🏾 - nnn

Why is this important for children who use spoken language?

It is critical to know which sounds they have access to because it will potentially influence the language structures they are able to detect/hear. For example, if a child has difficulty hearing /s/, they might has difficulty with hearing possessive -s, plurals, prepositions.

Also, LMH can help detect a change in access to sound that may warrant referral to audiology for programming as the child may no longer be getting their optimal benefit.

If spoken language is the chosen communication modality of the family, then it is important to ensure that children have optimal access to all speech sounds.

At its core, the LMH is a DETECTION task that provides information that informs our care.
