How many Parvo puppies do you think we saw in the last 24 hours? I’m positive a few vaccines is WAAAAAY more affordable than treatment. Please, I’m begging you…just make an appointment with literally ANY vet 😩 We’re so tired of watching these sweet babies suffer unnecessarily 💔

🚨 Your Pet WILL Find Your Drugs 🚨

We see it every. single. day.

Pets getting into:
🌿 Ma*****na
💊 Benzodiazepines like Ativan/Xanax
⚠️ Illicit substances such as methamphetamine
…and many other recreational or prescription drugs.

Every single night, pets arrive at emergency hospitals intoxicated, critically ill, scared, and sometimes fighting for their lives.

Here’s the truth:
Your pet absolutely CAN and WILL find your drugs.

They find:

* The discarded end of a blunt on the ground
* Ma*****na ashes in fire pits or ashtrays (YES — even ashes can cause intoxication)
* Gummies and edibles left in bags or on counters
* Pills inside purses, backpacks, or nightstands
* Drugs dropped on the floor
* Drugs hidden in places owners swear were inaccessible

Trust us — if there’s a way to get into it, they’ll find it.

And here’s another important thing:
👉 We do NOT care that you use drugs.
👉 We are NOT calling the authorities.

What we DO care about is saving your pet’s life.

We cannot effectively treat your pet if you are not honest with us about what they could have gotten into. Even when owners insist there is “NO WAY,” many times there absolutely WAS a way.

We routinely drug test suspected intoxication cases because knowing what substance is involved helps us:
✔ Treat faster
✔ Treat more appropriately
✔ Avoid complications
✔ Give your pet the best possible outcome

Please understand:
Being honest with your veterinary team can literally save your pet’s life.

One more important point:
If you arrive at the emergency hospital and appear significantly impaired by drugs or alcohol, you may not legally be able to provide informed consent for medical decisions regarding your pet.

What does that mean?
If possible, bring someone with you who is sober and able to make medical decisions. Otherwise, emergency stabilization and life-saving care may be initiated at the veterinarian’s discretion, and associated costs will still apply.

Please keep ALL drugs secured and away from pets:
❌ Purses
❌ Countertops
❌ Fire pits
❌ Backyards
❌ Nightstands
❌ Coat pockets
❌ Backpacks
❌ Vehicles

Because we promise you:
Your pet can access places you think they can’t.

Help us keep your pets safe. 🐾

🚨 Seizures in Dogs: When “Monitoring” Is NOT Enough 🚨

One of the most dangerous misconceptions we hear in emergency medicine is:
“Let’s just monitor and see how they do.”

If your pet has had **2 or more seizures within a 24-hour period**, this is considered a medical emergency called **cluster seizures**, and your pet needs veterinary attention immediately.

This is especially important overnight, on weekends, or during holidays when your primary care veterinarian may be closed.

Why is this so serious?

Repeated seizures can progress into a life-threatening condition called **status epilepticus**, where seizures continue back-to-back or do not fully stop between episodes. This can lead to:
🧠 Severe brain swelling
🧠 Dangerous increases in body temperature
🧠 Oxygen deprivation
🧠 Organ damage
🧠 Permanent neurologic injury
🧠 Death

Every seizure places stress on the brain and body. Waiting too long can dramatically worsen your pet’s prognosis.

Prompt treatment with the appropriate anti-seizure medications is critical to:
✔ Stop seizure activity
✔ Reduce brain inflammation and swelling
✔ Prevent progression to status epilepticus
✔ Protect your pet’s long-term neurologic health

If your pet has more than one seizure in a 24-hour period and your veterinarian is closed:
❌ Do NOT “wait and see”
❌ Do NOT simply monitor at home
✅ Come directly to the emergency veterinarian for evaluation and treatment

Today, we celebrate the incredible mothers in veterinary medicine — the women who care for their families with the same compassion, strength, and dedication they give to every patient who walks through the clinic doors. 💙🐾

VetMed Moms wear so many hats: healer, comforter, surgeon, teacher, chauffeur, homework helper, late-night cuddler, and everything in between. They work nights, weekends, and holidays, often sacrificing precious time with their own families to care for someone else’s beloved pet in moments of fear, uncertainty, and hope.

Behind every emergency call, every long shift, and every exhausted smile is a mother giving her all — both at home and in the hospital.

To the moms in vet med who balance compassion with professionalism, who show up even when they’re tired, and who continue to pour love into both their patients and their children: we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you today. ❤️

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing VetMed Moms making a difference every single day. 🌸🐶🐱

Cutest patient of the night 🖤 This little guy wasn’t feeling himself, with a snotty nose and a high fever. It’s a good thing we see most anything that fits through the door (within reason).

Dr. Reay was a large animal vet before she returned to her emergency medicine roots (she was an emergency and critical care technician for 15 years before becoming a vet). Pics in the comments ⬇️

**🚨 Trouble Delivering Puppies? Know the Signs of Dystocia 🚨**

Dystocia (difficult birth) happens in nearly **1 in 4 dogs** and can quickly become an emergency for both mom and puppies. Knowing when to act can save lives.

👉 **Call your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY if you see:**

* **Strong straining for 30–60 minutes with no puppy**
* **More than 2–4 hours between puppies**
* **Green or foul-smelling discharge before the first puppy**
* **Gestation over 72 days or >24 hours after temp drops below 99°F**
* **Mom is exhausted, crying, or in severe pain**

⚠️ **Why it happens:**

* Weak or stopped contractions (**uterine inertia** – most common)
* Puppy stuck or too large (**obstruction**)
* Breed risk (Bulldogs, Pugs, Frenchies), illness, or stress

🩺 **What we do:**

* Exam, X-rays, or ultrasound to assess puppies
* Medications (oxytocin/calcium) if appropriate
* **Emergency C-section if needed**

👉 **When in doubt—call. Waiting too long can cost puppies and put mom at risk.**

We are open 6am-6pm M-F and 24/7 on weekends and holidays!
