April is National Minority Health Month — a time to recognize that not everyone has equal access to good healthcare, and to ask why.

Health disparities are not a matter of bad luck. They are the result of real, documented barriers: cost, lack of insurance, language differences, and systemic inequities in how care is delivered and who receives it.

At the People's Health Clinic, we believe every person deserves high-quality care and to be treated with dignity and respect — regardless of income, insurance status, or background. That belief is why we exist.

April is National Minority Health Month

Health equity means the people we serve have a voice in how we deliver care.

In 2025, PHC launched our Patient Advisory Committee to an overwhelming response. Community members stepped forward to help guide program development and ensure that the care we provide reflects the real needs of our patients.

Our PAC members bring something no clinical degree can teach: lived experience navigating the barriers our patients face every day — language access, food insecurity, transportation, and the challenge of managing health without insurance. Their feedback directly shapes our strategic planning and service expansion.

Many of our staff members are also former patients or first-generation graduates now giving back to the community that shaped them. Together with the PAC, they ensure that the People's Health Clinic is not just a place that serves our community — it is built by our community.

April is National Minority Health Month — a reminder that ZIP code, income, and job type can determine whether someone gets care or goes without it. In Summit and Wasatch Counties, thousands of essential workers in hospitality, construction, and childcare have no health insurance and no safety net.

The People's Health Clinic is that safety net. Preventive care, chronic disease management, screenings, and care coordination — all at no cost to patients.

This April, we recognize Autism Awareness Month and National Minority Health Month. One thing we know for certain: vaccines and Tylenol taken during pregnancy do not cause autism.

At the People's Health Clinic, we're committed to ensuring every patient — including those with autism and their families — can access the care they need, regardless of insurance status.

April is National Minority Health Month —

At the People's Health Clinic, healthcare doesn't end with a diagnosis. Our community health case management team — led by Patient Access Director Patty Garcia — turns care plans into action by helping patients overcome the barriers that stand between them and better health.

In 2025, this team: — Secured $3.7 million in no-cost medications — Processed over 2,000 patient assistance applications — Coordinated 882 free transportation rides — Connected patients facing food insecurity to our Food Farmacy — Completed 493 Medicaid applications on behalf of patients

Our case managers are bilingual, bicultural, and deeply rooted in the community they serve. Many share the lived experience of our patients. That trust is what makes outcomes possible.

National Minority Health Month reminds us that health equity requires more than clinical care. It requires people who understand the barriers and know how to break them down.

Thank you for the work you do every day.

Who should be screened to make sure their kidney are working properly?

- Every adult should see their doctor once a year or more often if needed so your doctor can decide if testing is needed
- If you have diabetes or high blood pressure you may need to be seen more often to check for kidney damage
- If you have frequent urination, burning when urinating, see blood in your urine or take a lot of ibuprofen or naproxen you should see your doctor right away

--------------------------
