I wanted to highlight one of our external speakers, Dr. Girish Joshi, who we are so excited to learn from!

Girish P. Joshi, MBBS, MD, FCAI, FASA is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas. He is an attending anesthesiologist at the Parkland Health, Dallas, Texas. Dr. Joshi received his medical degree (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, M.B.B.S.) and Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in anesthesiology from the B. J. Medical College, University of Puɳe, India. He received his fellowship in anesthesiology from the College of Anaesthetists, Ireland (F.C.A.I.), and then received a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University College Dublin, Ireland. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Joshi has published numerous original articles, review articles and editorial in several high impact journals. He has been an invited speaker at many National and International conferences. He is an Executive Section Editor for Anesthesia & Analgesia and a Section Editor for UpToDate. He is the Past President of the Society For Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA), the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine (SASM), and the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists (TSA). He serves on the Board of Directors of Acreditas Global. He has received Distinguished Service Awards from SAMBA and TSA. He is a member of the Procedure Specific Pain Management (PROSPECT) Group, an international collaboration of anesthesiologists and surgeons that formulates evidence-based procedure specific pain management recommendations. In addition, the Prospect group is the Think Tank contributing to European Society of Anesthesiologists vision on perioperative medicine.

We are honored to have Dr. Hugh Hemmings join us this February in Park City, UT.

Hugh C. Hemmings Jr., MD, PhD, FRCA is the Joseph F. Artusio Jr. Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology, Professor of Pharmacology, and Senior Associate Dean for Research at Weill Cornell Medicine, and Anesthesiologist-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Hemmings earned a BS in Biochemistry from Yale College, a PhD in pharmacology from Yale Graduate School, and an MD from Yale Medical School. He completed postdoctoral work at The Rockefeller University, a residency in Anaesthesia at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and a fellowship in cardiac anesthesia at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he has been a faculty member for more than 25 years. An internationally recognized neuropharmacologist, Dr. Hemmings is an expert in the synaptic effects of general anesthetics and mechanisms of neuronal signal transduction. His research is supported by grants from the US National Institutes of Health. He is active in several national and international societies for anesthesiology and neuroscience, and serves as editor-in-chief of the British Journal of Anaesthesia. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, a member of the Association of University Anesthesiologists, and a member of the US National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Hemmings has authored over 200 articles in anesthesiology and neuroscience, and has edited four books, including Pharmacology & Physiology for Anesthesia: Foundations and Clinical Application, 2e published in 2019.

Today, I wanted to highlight one of our external speakers, Professor Kate Leslie.

Professor Kate Leslie is head of research in the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management, Royal Melbourne Hospital, and professorial fellow at the University of Melbourne and Monash University in Australia. Prof. Leslie’s research interests include anaesthetic depth monitoring and awareness, major perioperative outcomes, sex/gender equity and building the next generation of research leaders. She was a leader of the B-Aware, ENIGMA 1-2, POISE 1-3, RELIEF, Balanced and PADDI studies, and is currently leading the SNaPP RCT (sugammadex vs. neostigmine and postoperative pulmonary complications. She has published >250 papers and been awarded >A$22M in grants. Prof Leslie is a former president of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and the Australian Medical Council. She is one of the six editors of Miller’s Anesthesia textbook, one of the ten editors of the British Journal of Anaesthesia and a member of the Anesthesiology editorial board. She was appointed as an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2016, the second highest national honour in Australia. Kate is a passionate skier, spending her winter in the Australian Alps and her summer travelling the world in search of snow.

We are only weeks away from the start of our annual conference and it is guaranteed to be as great as ever. We are fortunate to have 3 amazing guest speakers and an incredible lineup of University of Utah department of Anesthesiology speakers who will present on a variety of topics. Outside of session times we have workshops that cover regional anesthesia, TTE, Airway and EEG (new this year).

We are very honored to have Dr Mason join us this year at our Theodore H Stanley 68th Annual Update in Anesthesiology to speak on “Dexmedetomidine - Clinical Applications and Limitations”, “Pediatric Ambulatory Anesthesia - Best Practices” and “Pediatric Sedation - Minimizing Risks and Maximizing Success”.

Dr Keira Mason, MD, is Associate Professor at Harvard Medical and Boston Children's Hospital, Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine.

Dr Mason was Director of Radiology Anesthesia and Sedation at Boston Children's Hospital for almost 19 years. She has written policies, guidelines, and protocols for sedation delivered by both anesthesiologists and non-anesthesiologists in the Department of Radiology. She has edited three textbooks on Pediatric Sedation and co-edited a textbook entitled Total Intravenous Anesthesia and Target Controlled Infusions. She has published many chapters and manuscripts on dental sedation and office-based anesthesia. She has served on FDA advisories for sedation, chaired international sedation task forces, created Adverse Event Sedation Reporting Tools which are in widespread, on-line use, and has conducted FDA approved pediatric studies using Dexmedetomidine. As Co-Chair of the American
Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Taskforce for Sedation and Sedation Continuing Education Committee on Sedation and Anesthesia, she had a leadership role in restructuring the dental continuing education requirements in the United States She is a frequent guest lecturer at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and lectures to multispecialties on dental and office-based anesthesia and sedation worldwide, including the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD). Dr. Mason started an annual Pediatric Sedation Conference in 2005, which is the only international conference of this kind. In 2012 she expanded the conference to include dental sedation and dental simulation, establishing the Pediatric Dental Sedation Outside of the Operating Room Conference. To date, it is the only conference that is not affiliated with a dental society that has been approved as a registered continuing education provider for New York State and California. She is on the Editorial Board of British Journal of Anesthesia and has held committee positions and chair positions at the ESA, ASA. and SAMBA.

Dr TJ Gan, MD, MBA, MHS, FRCA (UK), FRCA (Ire), LicAc is Professor and Head of the Division of Anesthesiology of Critical Care and Pain Medicine at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA) and the Founding President of the American Society for Enhanced Recovery (ASER), President of the Perioperative Quality Initiative (POQI), President Elect of the Association of Academic Anesthesiology Chairs (AAAC), a Past President of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA) and the International Society for Anesthetic Pharmacology (ISAP). Dr. Gan also serves as the Vice Chair of Stony Brook Clinical Practice Management Plan (CPMP) and chairs the Pension and Benefits Committee.

Over the next few months I am going to highlight our conference speakers.

Today, I would like to introduce Dr. Linda Shore-Lesserson, MD, FAHA,FASE. Dr. Shore-Lesserson is Professor of Anesthesiology at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra-Northwell, and Director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at North Shore University Hospital, the flagship hospital of Northwell Health in New York. She is Co-Chair of the hospital Patient Blood Management Task Force. Research interests lie in the field of hemostasis and thrombosis as it relates to cardiovascular disease. The results of her research have been published in high impact peer reviewed journals and she lectures frequently at national and international scientific meetings.
