Mom's To Be You Need PT 🤰🧘‍♀️

Did you know that physical therapy can help pre and post pregnancy? Did you know peeing a little isn’t normal?!! It is so important to make sure you find a skilled physical therapist to assist with proper muscle strengthening, mobility, and therapeutic massage. PTs are able to improve issues such as leaking, safe progression for exercise, and pain relief.

Previously women simply accepted that their body had changed due to pregnancy and there is nothing that can be done about it. Physicians are becoming more knowledgable about the expertise of physical therapy in facilitating improvement of healing post pregnancy. It is extremely important women are able to address the needs for themselves and not just their family.

Whether you’ve had a c-section or a vaginal delivery scar tissue can build up and not allow for proper muscle recruitment. If there is scar tissue build up as well as muscle tightness due to guarding, the muscles are unable to achieve the optimal muscle length tension relationship to facilitate the ideal contraction. Manual therapy along with guidance of functional mobility and strengthening interventions are key to improving these deficits.

We at Forward love helping mom’s and women to improve their health and wellness. Please reach out with any questions!

Kids Need Nature, Here's Why 🏔⛷🌲

We’ve heard the term “Nature heals” but why and how can it affect children. At Forward Rehab we support a local non profit, this non profit brings kids and their families to explore and enjoy the outdoors. We know the feeling we get and the sense of peace when being out in nature. We wanted to do a little digging to understand why nature is good for us and how can it improve kids health.

Published research has shown kids spending time outdoors improves concentration, decreases obesity rates, and improves academics. As stated previously, we get a sense of peace being out in nature; nature was found to decrease stress and aggression in children. The earlier exposure to nature has been found to have a lasting impact on the value children feel towards the environment.

In Norway a study was done to see what setting would better improve children’s motor coordination. It was found that a natural forest setting versus a structure playground setting better improved motor skills in children. Not only does being in nature improve motor skills but cognitive as well. In children with ADHD a study was done to see if play time in a building such as a basketball court, indoor playing video games, or outside in nature improved concentration times. Can you guess which one improved concentration times the best? You got it, nature.

There are so many benefits for children to be in nature and it needs to be continued through encouragement at home and in schools. It improves motor skills, cognition, academics, social interaction, which in turn improves overall health. With obesity and depression on the rise in children we need to find a way to break this cycle. Even simply having more greenery around children in urban areas has demonstrated positive improvements. Find a way to support your children and your community to encourage getting outside and enjoying nature.

⭐️ Healthy Tips During Poor Air Quality

🔥 Our area was recently hit with the The windows were open and I smelled it. I was just thinking in the morning during my hike how I was grateful we had relatively clean air. Not being able to get outside and exercise is tough but the damaging effects this air can have on us is long lasting. After the residue of the smoke lingering in my head I wanted to do a little digging to find some tips on trying to maintain and combat poor air quality.

🔸 As simple as it sounds: don’t exercise outside and close windows. Believe it or not there are people who will exercise outside and want to get their mountain biking in even in these horrible conditions. This leads to emergency room visits especially if they have pre-existing conditions. Why you ask would someone do this…beyond my understanding as well. But please, wait until the air improves to do any outdoor activity, this includes running around with your furry friends as well 🏃🏼‍♀️ ❌ 🐕

🔸 Make sure to stay hydrated and take vitamins if you are not getting enough nutrients from food sources. There may not be an abundance of resources but there are some stating vitamin B, particularly B6 and 12 as well as folate can help strengthen your body’s defense mechanism of genome molecules that can be mutated when exposed to air pollutant particles

🥬 🥚 🍣 Foods rich in B6, B12, and folate can include: poultry, pork, oats, salmon, eggs, beans, liver, dark leafy greens

🔸 As with any new changes in diet or specific needs contact your health care provider for your individual needs 👩‍⚕️

“You’re only limited by your creativity”.

One of my toughest and most favorite professors would always say this to us. As you can see in this picture, this isn’t your conventional pediatric physical therapy set up. Keep it simple:
⭐️what are your functional goals &
⭐️how can you motivate your patient to achieve them

In this case we were working on standing, moving between surfaces, and ambulating short distances. Kids are relatively easy to entertain. He loved knocking things down, as many kids do. We had some foam blocks, cones, and medicine balls.

Would it have been easier to have a designated space just for pediatric patients within this facility, absolutely. However, this pushed me as a PT to realize I don’t need a fancy set up in order to provide quality care. Families seemed to appreciate the variety and different approach we took to helping their kids develop.

🤸🏼‍♀️ Hamstring Stretch with Dynamic Mobility.

Simple. Easy. Can Do Anywhere.

Make sure to:
☑️ Keep Back Flat. ☑️ Foot/toes up or pulled back toward head. ☑️ Don’t push past pain.

3 Important Tips:
✨ Reach in 3 directions (straight towards foot, inside & outside of foot)

✨ Keep Knee Straight with back flat

✨ Add a Slight Bend in the knee for stretch in proximal hamstrings

Last image shows the hamstring muscles which are on the back/posterior part of your thigh. They start up high on your sit bone or ischial tuberosity and cross the back of the knee.

If you have more questions regarding stretching, mobility, or these muscles in particular please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Please give a ❤️ if you are enjoying these videos!!

Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸 Let’s hope everyone stays safe out there! Here is a quick tutorial on how to use kinesiotape and an ace wrap for an acute ankle injury to manage edema/swelling.

Apply kinesiotape anchor near lymph nodes when able. The tape helps to create a pressure gradient that lifts the tissue and helps pull the swelling up towards the anchor.
✨Cut into strips
✨Peel backing one at a time and lay down with no stretch applied
✨Can repeat on other areas of edema/swelling surrounding ankle

With ace wrap start at arch and wrap around making a figure 8.
✨Pull taught but make sure circulation in toes is still efficient
✨Can wrap up past ankle bones up calf if prefer
✨Anchor to prevent from unraveling

Top 3 things to do for acute ankle sprain:
✨Elevation
✨Compression
✨Effleurage/massage for swelling

💫 3D HIP MOBILITY, HALF KNEEL Let’s get after those tight hip flexors!! Hiking, biking, running…all of those fun summer activities can get those hips sore

✨ Everything connects. If your hips are tight it can affect your back, knees, the whole chain!

💫 It’s important to make sure you’re doing mobility work in 3D motion or triplanar: sagittal, frontal, transverse planes. This is how your body works and moves. We need to address all areas.

✨ Can do this in standing as well with front foot elevated or placed in front. Hope this was helpful and you enjoyed my sidekick .boonedawg 🐕
