Shingles is a viral infection that causes a rash that may be painful. Shingles is caused by varicella-zoster (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays dormant (inactive) in the body. The virus can reactivate years later, causing shingles. It may clear in a few weeks without treatment, but medical intervention with a dermatologist can help speed recovery and prevent complications, which can be severe! About 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime. An estimated 1 million people get shingles each year in this country. Even children can get shingles. Your risk increases as you get older.

Stretch marks, also known as striae distensae, are a common type of scar that appears as lines or bands on the skin. They occur when the skin stretches or shrinks rapidly, causing the collagen and elastin in the dermis to rupture. While not a serious medical problem, they can be a cosmetic concern for some individuals. They can affect anyone. They are often associated with pregnancy and puberty due to weight fluctuations, muscle growth, or even certain medical conditions.
Appearance and progression:
Initial Stage: stretch marks often appear as reddish or purplish lines.
Fading Stage: over time, they typically fade to a white or silvery color and become less noticeable.
Depressed or Raised: they may be slightly depressed or raised compared to the surrounding skin.
How to Care for Stretch Marks:
-Stay hydrated
-Use moisturizers
-Exfoliate regularly
-Professional Treatments: microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser therapy.

Mole mapping uses high-resolution photographs to take an inventory of all lesions on your body. Lesions can be both cancerous (malignant) and non-cancerous (benign). Mole mapping pictures provide a way to track changes on your skin if you have a large number of unusual moles or if you have a history of skin cancer.

The vast majority of moles are not dangerous. Moles that are more likely to be cancerous are those that look different than other existing moles or those that first appear after age 25. If you notice changes in a mole's color, height, size, or shape, don’t wait to give us a call to evaluate it. You also should have moles checked if they bleed, ooze, itch, or become tender or painful. A skin exam is meant to identify moles, growths, and other changes on your skin. The shape, size, border, color, and other characteristics of the suspicious growth can help your doctor diagnose an underlying medical condition. Sun exposure that you had as a child can increase the number of moles you have as an adult. Make sure to protect your skin against the sun and watch your moles carefully. New moles are more likely to become cancerous. A review of case studies found that 70.9% of melanomas arose from a new mole. If you're an adult with a new mole, it's important to have it checked by your doctor or dermatologist.

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common chronic skin condition characterized by inflammation, itching, and redness of the skin. It often present with dry, scaly, and sensitive patches that can vary in severity. Eczema can affect people of all ages but is particularly common in children. Eczema can be hereditary. If your mom or dad had sensitive skin, it’s possible that you may inherit that from them as well or pass it on to your children. Eczema can be treated but cannot be cured. There are many creams available that can help control eczema, but ultimately, it comes and goes. In addition, certain factors may cause eczema flares, like weather changes or harsh products, so ideally, these are avoided as much as possible. A skin maintenance routine is important for helping prevent eczema flares. Getting on a good routine of gentle skincare, including mild cleansers and thick moisturizers, can help with itching and preventing future flares to some degree. In addition, it’s important to avoid fragrances or other chemicals that may be irritating if you have eczema.

If you have a birthmark, you are not alone. Many people have at least one birthmark, which is an area of pigmentation that typically appears at birth or soon after. Our providers can help patients understand the reason for the imperfections on their skin and help them decide if removal would be beneficial. Usually, birthmarks are only a concern for your appearance. Birthmarks can be classified into two main types: vascular and pigmented. But certain types can increase your risk of skin cancer. If your birthmark bleeds, hurts, itches, or becomes infected, call us right away! If you are self-conscious about one or more of your birthmarks, there are treatment options available to have them removed. Laser therapy and topical medications are the most common birthmark removal treatments, but surgery may also be recommended to remove large or cancerous birthmarks. If you’re interested in learning more, we recommend scheduling an appointment with us!

Actinic keratosis is usually a scaly spot that is found on sun-damaged skin and is usually not tender, though it may be pink or red and rough, resembling sandpaper. They occur most frequently on the face, scalp, neck, and forearms. Actinic keratoses are considered precursors to squamous cell carcinoma, although most do not progress past the precancer stage. Is actinic keratosis a form of skin cancer? No, it is a premalignant condition that can signal that skin cancer may develop and should be examined by a dermatologist! Who is at risk of developing an actinic keratosis? Most people aged 40-50, although teens who have high exposure to sunlight may develop it early on as well! Can actinic keratosis recur? Yes, those who have had an actinic keratosis are more likely to have another lesion of this type and also more like to develop a squamous cell carcinoma. How do I prevent actinic keratosis? Those prone to actinic keratosis should have routine examinations and full-body checks by their dermatologists!

Do you have irritation around your mouth and nose that resembles a rash or acne? Have you been applying acne products, moisturizers, or Vaseline/Aquaphor and it still seems dry, irritated, and bumpy? Stop applying products and call us because you may have perioral dermatitis! The exact cause of perioral dermatitis is unknown, but there are several factors that can contribute to it like:
topical steroid creams, heavy makeup or moisturizers, hormonal changes, bacterial/fungal infections, allergic reactions, inhalers, stress, and genetics.
To effectively heal perioral dermatitis it is crucial to identify and eliminate triggers while using appropriate medications and skincare practices. This often involves simplifying your skincare routine, discontinuing topical steroids, and potentially incorporating antibiotics.
