Alignment is the most important factor in musculoskeletal health.
Subluxation, or misalignment of a joint, causes an automatic reflexive nerve signal to be sent from the spine (not the brain) to the muscles that attach to the bones out of alignment. This signal tells the muscles to clench and guard, in order to create a splint over the the injured joint.
This signal only turns off IF the alignment is restored, and eventually causes a cramp (also called a knot) that shortens the muscle and tethers the bones, leading to twisting of the skeletal frame. This twisting leads to uneven wear inside the joints of more than just the damaged joint, particularly if it’s one of the key joints of the pelvis or upper ribs where everything passes through to the extremities and head.
I call these areas “The Golden Gates”. There is an Upper Gate in the top three ribs under the collarbone, and a Lower Gate in the p***c bone.
If a Gate is “off the hinge”, nothing can pass through that area properly. If it remains like that, it can lead to a cascade of symptoms extending far beyond the injured Gate.
Carpal Tunnel, Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow, Rotator Cuff injuries all come from subluxation in the Upper Gate. Chronic Lower Back Pain, Piriformis Syndrome that causes certain types of Sciatica, Chronic Hamstring, and Calf tightness, as well as Achilles Tendonitis and Plantar Fasciitis all come from subluxation in the Lower Gate.
Twisting and rotation of the pelvis also changes the angle in which the femur (upper leg bone) inserts into the hip joint, causing the leg to swing differently, and the foot to strike the ground at an angle it’s not designed to take. This causes a chain reaction through the foot, ankle, knee, hip, and spine, creating pinch points inside the joints and wearing out the cartilage in these points faster than it can be replaced, leading to arthritis. This can happen all the way into the spine, wearing out and weakening the side of the disc, which can lead to bulging or rupture.
Visiting a qualified Chiropractor (Doctor of Joint Alignment) regularly is an important step in restoring musculoskeletal balance. Targeted Massage Therapy helps repair soft tissue damage, lengthening and un-tethering muscles that have often been holding on for years, even decades. CranioSacral Therapy helps with Subconscious Holding Patterns created to protect traumatized areas, often dating as far back as early childhood or even prenatal. Egoscue and other exercise programs designed for postural realignment help restore and maintain alignment achieved through these corrective modalities.
