Why Building Habits Matters for Both Mind and Body

One of the most powerful shifts you can make is treating exercise and nutrition like drinking water—something your body just does, automatically.

Here’s why:

🧠 The Brain & Habit Formation
• Habits are formed through a process called neuroplasticity—your brain wiring itself around repeated behaviors.
• When you consistently pair an action (like exercising at 10 AM) with a reward (feeling energized, calmer, accomplished), your brain learns: “this is good—do it again.”
• Over time, this shifts the action from requiring willpower to becoming an automatic response stored in the basal ganglia (your brain’s habit center).

🌡️ The Nervous System & Regulation
• Movement helps regulate the nervous system by releasing built-up stress hormones and activating the parasympathetic system (“rest and digest”).
• Eating balanced meals with steady nutrients stabilizes blood sugar, which directly impacts mood regulation and emotional resilience.
• When these routines are consistent, your body experiences safety and predictability—both essential for reducing anxiety and supporting mental health.

⚖️ What Happens When You Skip
• Miss a workout → your nervous system loses one of its healthiest outlets for stress.
• Eat poorly → blood sugar spikes and crashes, making irritability and brain fog more likely.
• Break routine → your system feels “off,” and small tasks can suddenly feel overwhelming.

✅ The Goal

Your goal this week isn’t to “find motivation.”
Motivation is fleeting and tied to how you feel in the moment.

The goal is to train your brain and nervous system to recognize movement and nourishment as non-negotiables—just like water.
When you reach that point, not doing them will feel more uncomfortable than doing them.

That’s when fitness and mental health truly integrate into your lifestyle—no force, no guilt, just flow.

Wasatch County Fair Rodeo 🤠✨

One of my favorite traditions, year after year. There’s nothing quite like the sights, sounds, and spirit of the rodeo—it always feels like coming home. I couldn’t help but reminisce about my own rodeo days… this lifestyle, the horses, the community—it’s unforgettable and forever in my heart.

Tonight was extra special because I got to share it with two of my favorite people—my hubby and our sweet Ember. She participated in the stick horse races and absolutely owned her warm-up—dancing to the music, laughing, and having the time of her life. 💃🐎 Her joy was contagious, and watching her experience the rodeo magic was priceless.

Even with all the changes in our community, this event remains one of my favorites. Some things are just timeless. ❤️

There’s something powerful about watching a man run into his strength. 💥

This is Phil, running the final stretch of the Olympic Hill Challenge—nearly 2 miles uphill in the Park City mountains. What you don’t see in this video is the 10 years of inner and outer work it took to get here. The breathwork. The mindset shifts. The choice to rise—again and again.

This time, he wasn’t alone.

His son joined him for the climb. 18 years old, standing at the edge of adulthood, watching his dad embody what it means to stay committed, grounded, and open to growth.

This was more than a run. It was a generational moment.
A handing down of values.
A moment of arrival.

So proud to witness it.
This is integrated wellness.
This is the work. 🏔️✨

If you’re constantly dysregulated, don’t blame your body. It’s not broken — it’s responding appropriately to your environment. Healing starts with safety. ✨

‘A reminder that your nervous system *can’t* regulate in toxic relationships, work environments, or under chronic stress. Our body is designed to be on guard when we’re not safe. Designed to protect us from threats. If you’re stuck in fight or flight, look at your closest relationships. Your body speaks truths, and tries to get your attention so you’ll listen ‘ - The Holistic Psychologist

This isn’t new for me—just another quiet return to what matters.

I’ve spent too many seasons prioritizing everything and everyone else.
Shrinking. Shifting. Performing.

Now I keep asking myself:
Will this choice honor me—or betray me?

I’m not interested in chasing peace through chaos.
I’m creating it. Rooted. Regulated. Home in my body.

Choosing boundaries doesn’t make me selfish.
It makes me self-honoring.

This is a practice. And I’ll keep coming back.

“The familiar feels safe—until we teach ourselves that discomfort is temporary and a necessary part of transformation.”

This came up in session today.

We cling to the familiar not because it serves us but because it’s predictable. It gives us a false sense of safety, even when it’s keeping us stuck.

Real change—the kind that frees us—doesn’t ask for comfort.
It often asks for courage in the midst of emotional chaos.
It asks us to feel grief, uncertainty, even fear, and still move.

Discomfort isn’t a flaw in the process. It is the process.

And yes, it can be intense. It can feel like too much.

But every time we stay with it—breathe through it—we’re building trust with the part of us that knows:

“I was made for more than survival.”

Lifting More Than Weight: Strength Training & Stress Tolerance. ...

Lifting More Than Weight: Strength Training & Stress Tolerance.
Ever feel like stress, anxiety, or heavy emotions hit harder than they should? Like even small things can push you to the edge?

That’s a sign your window of stress tolerance is small.

When this window is narrow, stressors—big or small—can feel overwhelming. Avoiding discomfort might bring short-term relief, but over time, it shrinks that window even more, making it harder to handle life’s challenges.

Strength training changes that.

Under a barbell, your nervous system learns to sit with discomfort—your heart rate spikes, your muscles fatigue, and your mind tells you to quit. But when you push through, something shifts:

✅ Your body adapts
✅ Your mind adapts
✅ Your stress tolerance expands

This carries over into life. When you train your body to handle stress under load, you train your mind to handle stress in real time.

The Science Behind Strength Training & Stress Resilience
🧠 Expands your window of stress tolerance, so emotions feel more manageable
🔄 Regulates the nervous system, reducing anxiety & depressive symptoms
💪 Builds distress tolerance, so discomfort doesn’t control you
⚡ Reinforces a sense of control, especially in trauma recovery

The stress won’t go away. But when your capacity to tolerate it grows, it stops running your life.

Have you noticed this shift in your own training? I’d love to hear—how has lifting changed how you handle stress?

"If you are ready to feel it, you'll change everything."

This truth speaks to the courage it takes to face pain and heal from within. For many of us, avoidance has been the unspoken inheritance passed down through generations. We come from families and cultures that often pretend pain didn’t happen, but the unacknowledged wounds remain, waiting for someone strong enough to feel them.

Choosing to confront and process this pain is not an act of weakness—it’s a radical act of love and strength. It’s the moment you say, “This stops with me.” When you take this brave step, you’re not just healing yourself; you’re rewriting the story for your family, shifting your culture, and creating a ripple effect that touches the world.

Healing is deeply personal but never solitary. It’s an investment in humanity itself, breaking cycles and opening the door to connection, authenticity, and growth. Honoring your emotions and the stories they carry is how transformation begins.

If this resonates with you, know that you’re not alone in this journey. You have the power to create change, not just for yourself but for the generations that follow.

When the Storm Comes, Your Foundation Holds You.

Healing isn’t just for the peaceful moments—it’s for the days when the past resurfaces, when the weight of old wounds presses in, and when we’re called to face the hardest truths about ourselves.

Self-care isn’t a luxury. It’s the foundation that keeps us steady when life shakes us. It’s the quiet commitment to showing up—grounded, present, and whole—even when the storms rage.

Growth means taking accountability. It means listening, learning, and being willing to repair what was broken. It means recognizing the ways we fell short, not with shame, but with the determination to do better.

This journey has taught me that healing isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. It’s about rebuilding trust—first with ourselves, then with those we love.

So when the winds rise, when the past echoes loud, and when the weight feels unbearable—stand firm in the work you’ve done. Stand firm in who you are becoming.

Because the storms don’t break you when your foundation is strong.
