We have a few summer openings for Equine‑Assisted Activities!

At the barn, the horses always seem to know when someone new is coming. They get a little playful, a little curious — almost like they’re making room for whoever’s coming next.

What we offer is down to earth and it isn’t about “fixing” it’s about exploring. The Sojourn Barn is about having a quiet place to sort through the hard stuff life hands all of us at one point or another — sibling tension, feeling alone, divorce, loss, moving, blending families, or just the everyday weight that builds up over time.

The horses help in simple, honest ways: through play, curiosity, and those small moments that remind folks they don’t have to have it all figured out to show up.

If you or someone in your family is walking through tension, change, grief, or a new beginning, Sojourn is here when you’re ready.

Some people come for a one‑day experience —
a daddy‑daughter date night with the horses, a sibling play session to practice getting along, a ladies’ night focused on slowing down, laughing, and breathing again.

Others come for a series of activities to bring relationships closer over the summer.
Whatever you’re needing, the herd meets you right where you are.

Schedule a free call to see how we can support your next step.

No horse experience is necessary. All activities are ground based and led by a qualified degreed animal assisted licensed clinical Counselor. Evening and weekend appointments available.

The video compiles the current research and explains that even very young babies—months old, pre-verbal, and without conscious memory—are deeply affected by caregiver conflict. Research across multiple universities shows that infants don’t need language or explicit memory (recallable memories) to register stress. Their nervous systems track the emotional environment through tone of voice, physiological cues, and stress hormones, often with pinpoint accuracy.

Babies absorb conflict even when they seem unaware. Studies show their brains respond to angry tones even during SLEEP, and their stress systems activate in sync with their caregivers’ cortisol levels.

They store these experiences as implicit memory, shaping how their stress-response system develops—even without the ability to recall the memories. The memory is stored in the body!

The most impactful part isn’t the argument itself but the absence of repair. When conflict ends without visible resolution, the infant’s nervous system stays on alert, waiting for a signal of safety….that never comes.

Chronic unresolved conflict recalibrates a baby’s baseline stress levels, leaving them more reactive even on calm days.

The goal isn’t .. to never argue—it’s to repair openly, because repair teaches our bodies what safety feels like and protects our healthy stress architecture. Our bodies and minds CAN learn about stressors and how to reconnect to others to feel safe again.

My how they’ve grown!

In the quiet of the Sojourn Center woods,
the barn cats take the lead—
silent practitioners-of-presence,
masters of the unhurried mind.

They guide you along winding paths
where the forest speaks in subtle tones:
the crisp snap of twigs,
the resin-sweet breath of pine,
the distant murmur of wind over the pastures.

Each pause is intentional.
Each step an invitation
to inhabit the body fully,
to return to the senses
with reverence and curiosity.

By the walk’s end,
the mind has softened,
the breath has deepened,
and the moment—
once elusive—
rests gently in open heart beats of rhythmic calm.

Getting closer to the Spring Equine sessions. It’s been a long winter! The forest trails have just a little snow left. The horses are shedding their winter coats and making way for meeting new friends. Embracing the journey!

A young horse steps up to a bell hanging on the gate—something she’s only ever watched the older horses do. For months she lingered in the background, studying the rhythm of the herd, learning the unspoken rules of this little social world.

And then, in a moment that looks small from the outside but feels huge on the inside, she gathers her courage. She moves forward, stretches out her neck through all the other horses, and rings the bell. It’s her first brave attempt at joining in, at communicating in a new way, at saying “I’m here too!”

There’s a beautiful truth in that. So many of us spend time observing before we feel ready to step in. We hang back, we learn, we wait for the moment when bravery outweighs fear, and when we finally take that step—when we speak up, reach out, or try something unfamiliar—we create our own opening for connection.

The reward isn’t just what comes after. It’s the act itself. It’s the courage to show up. It’s the quiet challenge of choosing growth over comfort.

Every time we dare to step forward and be seen, we remind ourselves that belonging isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being willing.
