We're receiving a lot of interested about an elective medication that will become available this week! Vuity is the first and only prescription eye drop to treat age related blurry near vision (presbyopia).
This is best prescribed for people who are between 40-55 years of age. You may see clearer or smaller lines of letters by 2-3 lines. There is no guarantee you will see 20/20 with your near vision with this drop alone. You would use 1 drop/day/eye. Currently, it is thought insurance companies will not pay for Vuity, as it's elective. Your out of pocket cost is expected to be about $80/month. It would need to be taken every day to assist you with your near vision.
Do not use Vuity if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
Use caution with night driving or with hazardous activities performed in low light conditions because your pupil size is smaller.
Temporary difficulty in adjusting focus between near and distance objects may occur. Do not drive or use machinery (your car) if vision is not clear.
Seek immediate medical care if any sudden vision loss occurs.
If you wear contact lenses, they should be removed prior to Vuity use and can be reinserted 10 minutes after dosing.
Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to help avoid contamination.
If more than one topical eye medication is being used, they should be administered at least 5 minutes apart.
The most common side effects are headache and eye redness. Additionally, you may experience severe miosis (a very small pupil size), stinging, burning, swelling, watering eyes, and any signs of infection.
The medication in Vuity is pilocarpine, which had been used as a glaucoma medicine commonly in the 1980's and early 1990's. We don't often use pilocarpine as a glaucoma medication in our practice now. If you would like a prescription, please let us know at your exam or make an appointment to discuss. This would be something elective that you would choose to do.
