When life took an unexpected turn, Amy chose courage.

A routine checkup in 2024 led to a mammogram and a stage II breast cancer diagnosis that changed everything. But Amy refused to let it define her. With guidance from her Advocate Condell Medical Center care team and the unwavering love of her son, she faced every step of treatment with determination.

After learning she had precancerous cells, Amy decided to undergo a double mastectomy and oophorectomy, followed by 25 radiation treatments. The road wasn’t easy, and she’s had several revision surgeries since, but her spirit never faltered.

“I gave myself permission to be sad, but I didn’t stay there. I got up and fought, because this is beatable.”

Amy leaned on her doctors, especially Dr. Amber Seba, her oncologist for medical expertise and emotional support. “She always takes the time to listen, to care, and to help me feel like myself again,” Amy shared.

Through every challenge, Amy’s son, Jackson, was her anchor. “He made me want to fight. I wanted to show him that no matter what, you never give up.”

Today, Amy is a proud survivor and a voice of hope for others navigating breast cancer. Her message: “You are stronger than you think.” 💕

Basketball is back and we partnered with the Chicago Bulls to provide a VIP fan tunnel experience to David, a heart transplant patient celebrating surpassing his first year with a new heart!

Just months into his time as a Chicago student, David, who came from Nigeria to study engineering, started feeling run down, out of breath and even had trouble walking. He was soon diagnosed with heart failure – caused by a genetic defect he had since birth but had been asymptomatic his whole life – and transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was told he needed a heart transplant as soon as possible.

His mother was thousands of miles away.

“I was freaked out,” said David. “One day I’m pursuing my degree and the next I’m sick and wake up in a hospital. All my life I had been healthy. I was shocked.”

The team at Advocate Christ worked to make sure David’s mother and family in Nigeria were informed as they started the process to come be with him. In the meantime, David’s aunt and other family in Canada rushed to Oak Lawn to be by his side. The team also worked with David’s church, who helped find him an apartment to recover after discharge.

“David’s situation not only illustrates the importance of paying attention to symptoms and getting them checked out, but also just how much our team pulled together for this student far from home,” said cardiologist Dr. William Cotts. “David needed a new heart to survive and now is thriving, but he also needed extra support as a young adult far from home.”

In just a matter of weeks from his first symptom, David received life-saving heart transplant surgery and recently celebrated his one-year milestone in September. His mother was able to join him in Chicago just as he was discharged. He’s now recovering well and back to his engineering studies.

“I’m grateful for my new heart and this special experience,” David said.

Advocate teammates planted 75 trees at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital as part of its Season of Purpose community service initiative. The events brought together leaders and teammates to expand green space on the hospital campus.

These efforts support Advocate Health’s goal to help plant 30,000 trees across the communities it serves by 2030. The initiative includes volunteer events, community partnerships and collaboration with local organizations.

Outdoor green spaces are linked to improved health outcomes, reduced stress among health care workers and stronger community well-being. Advocate Health is also investing in healing gardens, green roofs and healthy food gardens to create restorative environments.

“Health doesn’t begin inside a hospital,” said Karen Lambert, president of Advocate Good Shepherd. “It begins in the environments where we live and work.”

Advocate Good Shepherd’s campus is home to nearly 1,600 trees, including a rare remnant oak woodland that dates back approximately 300 years.

At just 26 years old, Taylor is showing what true strength looks like in the face of breast cancer. A Crystal Lake resident and police social worker with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Taylor’s journey began when she discovered a lump while home sick in April. With family history of breast cancer, she didn’t wait, and her quick action led to a stage II triple-negative breast cancer diagnosis in June.

Taylor began chemotherapy in July at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, participating in the SCARLET study and using cold capping to help preserve her hair and a sense of normalcy. On October 14, she proudly completed her final chemo session and is preparing for a double mastectomy in November. Throughout her treatment, Taylor has continued serving her community and sharing her journey on TikTok to raise awareness among young women and encourage early detection.

“I was diagnosed for a purpose, and I’m still figuring that out,” Taylor said. “But if I can raise awareness for younger women like me, that’s my goal.”

🎓 Meet Monique - She's a pharmacist at Advocate South Suburban Hospital who recently earned her PharmD from Chicago State University—marking a major milestone in her career journey.

Since joining Advocate Health Care in 2016, Monique knew she wanted to become a pharmacist. With determination and the unwavering support of her husband, Derrick, she began classes in 2021 while raising two kids and balancing Derrick’s overnight shifts and second job.

💬 “It was a rollercoaster, and I wouldn’t be on that ride with anybody but him,” Monique shared.

To celebrate Derrick’s birthday and thank him for his support, Monique surprised him with tickets to Sunday’s Chicago Bears game. We’re proud to support Monique’s growth and were honored to help her and Derrick celebrate this incredible achievement.

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center welcomed the first patients to its new hospital tower – some of them too young to even realize they are making history for the hospital.

Among the first patients were tiny newborns cradled in their parents’ arms. The babies ranged from the gleeful parents’ first to their fifth babies. One newborn was the third generation to be born at the hospital. During their first few days, their parents rocked and fed them to beautiful views of the city skyline or Wrigley Field from the brand new tower in the heart of Lakeview.

“This tower represents the future of health care on Chicago’s North Side for patients of all ages,” said Matt Primack, president of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. “Our new mother/baby suites give families a calm, private space to bond, rest, and celebrate life’s sweetest moments. That commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care is evident throughout the hospital, in an environment that promotes healing and innovation.”

The nine-story hospital tower adds nearly 330,000 square feet of new construction and features fully private patient rooms, advanced mother/baby suites, and a state-of-the-art intensive care unit. It also expands cardiology and outpatient cancer services, creating a centralized hub for comprehensive care.

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center is a nationally recognized Level I Trauma Center and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, offering advanced treatment and technology across a wide range of specialties.
