Please don’t say, “Don’t worry” OR “my child didn’t X until YZ so it’s ok” & here’s why:

EVERY SLP, pediatrician, teacher, pediatric therapist/interventionist, and parent needs to see this and know the difference between milestones and averages. BOTH of these are important to know and consider when looking at a child’s development, and it’s critical to know the difference. Why? Because many parents (and pediatricians) are interpreting milestones as averages and as a result, children in need of assessment and likely intervention are NOT getting referred. In fact, when you look up milestones on the Mayoclinic and WebMD they are EASILY confused as averages as they use phrases like “say as many as 10 words!” - as if that was a lot. This leads parents to think their children are “not that far behind” when they have less words than the milestone- when in fact, the child could be significantly behind. So please understand milestones are minimums and if your child is at or below that level, they are in the bottom 10% of kids their age- which means intervention is most likely needed. It’s also important to understand the average isn’t a maximum, it’s what 50% of children are able to do- so half of the children at that age are even higher than that number. If your child is at or below the milestones listed below, please consider a speech and language evaluation!

Pediatricians are conducting routine checks for autism, but new research suggests they frequently fail to act when screenings show cause for concern.

Agreed!!! Misleading articles like this one are so dangerous

Ok so I tried to let this go, but I just can’t. This was an article that was published in TIME last month and is just super upsetting because it’s articles like this that parents see and then DON’T SEEK INTERVENTION. And often it only takes ONE article like this to change a parents mind about getting help. I hate to think how many children and families this one article negatively impacted- so much so that I’m not even sharing the link because I don’t want to help spread misleading information. I just think it’s so important to counteract these misleading articles with lots and lots of info about the importance and benefits of early intervention. I’d love to hear your opinion, so let’s hear it! 👇🏼

These words are SO much more important to littles than colors, numbers, shapes etc! START HERE!!! They carry so much more weight, academic words will come!

We are currently covering the vocabulary milestone for 24 months: says 200 words.

Focus on words in these four categories before you jump into the more "academic" vocabulary.

We want words to be functional first and foremost, meaning that they can be used to request wants and needs, protest, and comment on the environment. There is nothing wrong with teaching colors, numbers, shapes, and letters. These should just come after FUNCTIONAL words that help your child to better communicate 🤗

Verbal language doesn’t happen over night! There are important foundational skills that must develop before we can target expressive language. Think of it as trying to learn long division without first being able to add, subtract and multiply.
