I've had to listen to the airplane safety announcements multiple times over the past few weeks during my summer travels.. And every time I wondered for how many people on the flight this is something hard to understand or do - putting your own mask on first before helping others.
At least to me it's initially very counterintuitive, especially while flying with my own children. But of course it makes sense.
And then I wondered for how many people this concept is even harder to apply to their day-to-day lives.. we put so much of our time, energy, effort and resources into other people and often put ourselves last. But the idea is the same as on the plane - if you don't get your oxygen, you can't help others getting theirs. If you don't take care of yourself first, how are you supposed to take care of others?!

Self care is not selfish, it's simply necessary!

What have you done for yourself today or this week?

150 minutes of exercise a week increases longevity and lowers the risk for most chronic diseases and mental illness..
The best part? It doesn't have to be crazy, a brisk walk or other moderate activity is enough and it can be broken up into small chunks of movement, almost like little exercise "snacks" here and there.. taking the stairs or a quick walk after a meal or between meetings will make a difference!

What gets you moving?!

How often do you feel hungry or have an appetite for something only to try and fight or control that feeling - either feeling powerful when you succeed or frustrated and like a failure when you don't?!
But have you ever asked yourself why we even think we should control or suppress such a healthy, natural sign coming from our body?

Marc David, MA, founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, gave an enlightening answer in an interview on how to better respond:
"When it comes to your appetite, our job is not to control it. Our job is to learn how to best be in a relationship with it.. being in a relationship requires that we listen, we pay attention, we get to know the person or thing we are in a relationship with. A relationship has its ups and downs, its challenges, successes and ultimately, relationship are asking us to grow."

Start a relationship with your food, your appetite, your eating habits. Take it slow, listen and learn, be present and keep trying..
And most importantly, enjoy!!

Did you know?!

I'm totally fine with greek yogurt (it's my daily breakfast) but chickpeas give me the worst gut aches and I definitely avoid them.. the other four I try to consume in moderation and I know I'm taking a risk when I do..

I bet everyone of us has a different reaction to these and there might be lots of other foods and drinks that cause irritation in your gut while someone else has no problems at all - a concept called "Bio-Individuality"..

One great way to get your veggies and fruit in for breakfast or a mid-morning snack is a green smoothie πŸ˜‹

A handful of spinach
A cup of frozen pineapple
Half a banana 🍌 or avocado πŸ₯‘ (or both - adds so many nutrients and creaminess!)
Coconut water / Almond milk / Kefir for the liquids (around 1cup)
One date (if you don't use banana dates add a bit of sweetness)
Optional add-ins:
Matcha or Maca powder (both superfoods)
Vanilla Rice Protein Powder
Fiber

Mix it in a blender and enjoy some tropical, healthy goodness!

P.s. I love smoothies for so many reasons but one of them is that they are so customizable to your liking and to the content of your fridge/freezer/pantry..

Share in the comments if you have a good recipe!
Cheers!

My go-to salad for lunch πŸ₯— a fresh, quick option for at-home or on the go!

- Spinach (rich in vitamins K&C, folic acid, iron and calcium)
- Roasted sweet potatoes (good source of fiber and minerals) --> I roast a batch of potatos or squash once or twice a week to throw onto my salads
- Tomatos (low in carbs but high in vitamins and antioxidants)
- Avocado (full of healthy fats, so important for brain & gut health)
- Pistachios (fiber, minerals, unsaturated fatty acids and they have more protein and less calories than most other nuts!)
- Pumpkin seeds (one of the best natural sources of magnesium)
- Goat cheese (totally optional but I believe everything tastes better with goat cheese πŸ˜„)
- good quality olive oil, tahini and salt+pepper for the dressing

What are you having for lunch?

So often we pride ourselves in being able to multitask, juggling multiple things and/or people at the same time in order to be "more efficient and productive".
Maybe we do get more things done that way but at what cost?
We forget to be present, to be in the moment, to give who or what we are dealing with our full attention..

Let's make it a today and pick a thing or two in our day we fully focus on! It could be
- sitting down for meal and just eating it, without reading, watching TV, checking our phones or other distractions, simply enjoying the flavor and texture of our dish
- going on a walk without listening to music or a podcast, noticing the small things around us.. the sounds, the breeze, the sunshine, the birds..
- listening whole-heartedly in a conversation with our partner, friend, child, colleague or customer

What other suggestions do you have? How can you incorporate more mindfulness into your life?

How does it feel being more present? Do you experience a deeper sense of satisfaction, gratitude, appreciation?

Just came back from my morning walk on a cold but beautiful day!
Walking has so many benefits πŸ‘‡and I try to go on one at least once a day..
I'm not good with sitting still for meditation so going on a walk helps me clear my mind and be in the moment.. I use it to get my body going again after sitting in front of the computer, after a meal to kickstart digestion or to listen to a podcast. Family walks to catch up and reconnect or coffee walks with a friends are also a great way to get those steps in while making your heart amd soul happy!

Why and when do you like to walk?!
