In light of last week's events, both at the local and national levels, there is a need to support parents in how to discuss violence and tragedy with their children.

Children and teens may struggle to understand and cope with news of shootings and violence. Parents can help by creating safe, open conversations that balance honesty with reassurance.

Here are some evidence-based strategies from child psychologists and mental health professionals to start the conversation:
• Start with what your child knows: Ask what they have heard and gently correct misinformation.
• Use age-appropriate language: Keep it simple and clear for younger children; with teens, allow
more discussion and questions.
• Validate feelings: Let them know it’s okay to feel scared, sad, or angry.
• Reassure safety: Explain what adults, schools, and communities do to keep kids safe.
• Limit media exposure: Repeated images and reports can heighten fear and anxiety.
• Model calm coping: Children look to parents’ reactions; show them healthy ways to manage stress.
• Encourage questions: Keep the door open for ongoing conversations instead of a one-time talk.
• Promote hope and action: Emphasize helpers, resilience, and ways they can make a difference (e.g., kindness, community support).

Remember: Talking about violence won’t make children more afraid—it helps them feel supported and safe. Check in often, listen more than you speak, and seek professional support if your child’s anxiety becomes overwhelming.
