Snowy weather is a good time for a reminder about puffy coats in car seats. 👇❄️👇❄️👇

When traveling in the car with the kids, avoid putting them in bulky coats/snowsuits and instead safely secure the baby/child in the car seat and THEN cover with a warm blanket.

“The thing that makes puffer coats warm — that they trap air with lots of loose feathers and down — is the exact same thing that makes them dangerous in the car seat, according to pediatrician Kimberly Giuliano, MD.

When a vehicle accident is extreme, the violent force that’s created by the impact compresses the bulky coat layers and can throw a child forward against the straps. Even if the child remains in the seat they risk injury to their chest, head and neck.

“Those big bulky coats cause too much separation between the belt and the child,” Dr. Giuliano says. “In a crash, the child is at risk for slipping out from under the straps.””

Many newborn babies suffer from a condition called jaundice caused by high levels of bilirubin. Bilirubin is formed when red blood cells break down and are excreted by the body.

Unfortunately, some infants are not able to properly metabolize bilirubin and can develop jaundice, which needs close monitoring. Some newborns need a treatment where the bilirubin is converted to a different form, so the liver and kidneys can more easily process and excrete it.

This kind of treatment – phototherapy – involves exposure to a special kind of blue-green light. Sadly, phototherapy can negatively impact the precious time spent bonding with your newborn. It also requires frequent bilirubin checks in the clinic which can be exhausting and stressful for families.

Mainstreet Pediatrics offers a safe and non-invasive phototherapy option that can help reduce time spent receiving phototherapy treatment. The Bili-Hut is a durable, high-intensity, multi-directional bilirubin treatment bed for babies with an even quicker treatment time allowing less time spent at the clinic. 👏👏👏

It’s always relieving to have some answers when your littles are sick… save these reminders for those tough times.

Babies under 3 months of age with a cough, runny nose or fever should be seen by their P*P or provider.

Babies over 3 months and under 6 months, the best treatment is first making sure they stay hydrated.

Liberal use of saline in the nose - either spray or drops - every 2-3 hours or at least before every feeding will help relieve congestion and cough due to post-nasal drip.

Conservative nasal auctioning is important. Too much suctioning can make the delicate nasal tissues swell and make things worse. If the baby is not eating or drinking well, or is uninterested in the people or things that typically make them happy they should be seen by their P*P.

For older babies, the same tips above apply but they can also try some OTC (over the counter) remedies such as Zarbees or Hyland’s cold formulations.

Coughing that is so severe that causes the baby to vomit, prevents them from eating/drinking/sleeping, or are accompanied by a fever should be evaluated by a provider.

Rapid breathing which also affects their ability to drink or eat also needs immediate attention.

Of course, don’t ever hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions for us!
