🔷EPIDURAL🔷

What is it?
An epidural is the most common tool for managing labor. It involves placing a needle into the spine to insert a catheter that delivers medication. The medication works to cause numbness in the lower part of the body.

Benefits 👇
🔷Can take effect quickly. Once the epidural is placed, you’ll most likely feel pain relief in 10-15 minutes.

🔷Considered safer for baby vs IV pain medication.

🔷Promotes much needed rest! Allows you to relax and sleep before pushing.

🔷In the event of a cesarean, it reduces preparation time.

Risks 👇
🔷Low blood pressure which can make you feel lightheaded or dizzy. To counteract any dips in pressure, IV fluids are given and side lying positions can be very helpful.

🔷Possible headache, fever and itching.

🔷More likely to have a longer pushing phase and need coached pushing to do so effectively.

As pregnancy progresses, the hormone relaxin increases and softens the ligaments and muscles in the pelvis. This helps to accommodate baby's growth, but relaxin can also cause the pelvis to easily misalign.

The Webster technique in chiropractic care specifically addresses subluxations in the pelvis and sacrum. The subtle adjustments work to create space and support a healthy labor and delivery.

🌟Who benefits?
-Those with a history of breech babies or current breech baby
-Those with concerns about sacrum or pelvis during pregnancy

For breech babies, the method doesn't attempt to turn baby, but rather create space through adjustments so that baby can move freely into a more optimal position.

Check out our top 3 tips for pushing with an epidural 👇

💥 Getting an epidural does not mean you’ll be stuck pushing on your back. Side lying and upright positions work really well even when you don’t have much sensation and if you are able to move, use the back of the bed to support you in an all fours position. Try different positions until you find one that works for you!

💥If you’re 10cm dilated, but still don’t feel pressure, give your body some time to get baby lower into the birth canal. This can greatly cut down on pushing time.

💥The mirror will either be a hard no or a hard yes. Being able to get a visual of the progress when you push effectively can be a great motivator. Ask your support team about utilizing the birth bar or tug of war too!

THE DILATION STATION 🚽

Why is the toilet actually an excellent spot to labor?

✨Our bodies are used to releasing the pelvic floor while sitting on the toilet. Relaxing the pelvic floor allows your baby to descend into the pelvis.

✨Laboring on the toilet puts you in a supported squat position. When we squat, our pelvis opens 30%, giving your baby more room to engage with the cervix and helps labor progress more easily.

✨It provides a more private space to labor peacefully with limited interruptions.

✨The toilet is an excellent place to rest. Flip yourself around, face the wall and stack a pillow or two on the toilet tank to rest your head. This is a great position to be in during recovery between contractions.

✨The toilet allows for many supportive hands. By rear facing, your back is exposed, creating space for your support team to provide comfort measures like counter pressure, massage, hip squeezes and hot/cold therapy.

✨Sitting on the toilet conveniently catches all fluids and bowel movements that may come out. These are normal and nothing your birth team hasn’t seen before!

Having a doula on your support team can help you discover every comfort tool available and allow labor to progress more smoothly. 👏

Check out this cool fact 🤯

Scientists have found fetal cells in scar tissues, specifically scars left by cesarean birth. These cells make collagen, meaning that the baby could actually be helping mom recover from birth by repairing her wound. These cells left behind by baby stay with mom forever. How amazing! ✨
