Hi, I am Dakota Goldsberry, a Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Play Therapist. I work at Counseling and Wellness Center in Parkersburg, WV and volunteer through our nonprofit, GiveMore Connections.
I am excited to share a project that is very close to my heart and central to the work I do as a clinical mental health clinician.
Some of the clients I serve are nonverbal, minimally communicative, or experience selective mutism. This could be a result of anxiety, trauma, ADHD, Autism, or other presenting concerns which can impact communication. AAC or Augmentative and Alternative Communication is speech. For some individuals it is their primary language. For others it is how communication remains accessible during anxiety, trauma, or nervous system shutdown. Either way, it is a valid and necessary form of communication. As a Play Therapist, my goal is to ensure that all clients are given equal access to care - whether thatโs through play, accommodations, or assistive devices.
I am raising funds to bring dedicated AAC speech access into our therapy office so clients can communicate needs, emotions, boundaries, and experiences in the ways that work best for them. This includes an iPad and AssistiveWare AAC apps that support both symbol based and text based communication. These tools will be shared clinical resources used ethically to improve accessibility, safety, and full participation in therapy. I will be training multiple providers on utilizing these resources so accessible care is maximized.
This work is part of GiveMore Connections and reflects my ongoing commitment to neurodivergent affirming and accessible mental health care. Communication should never be a barrier to receiving support. I need your help. We need to raise $2,000 to get this program running. Your gift is 100% tax deductible.
