The United Stated Census (2017) estimates the population of children in West Virginia under the age of 18 is 20.4%, with its total population being 1,852,994. The CDC (2018) projected an average prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder to be between 1% and 2%, this is approximately 1 in 6 individuals. According to these estimates, around 7,560 individuals up to the age of 18 can be estimated to be diagnosed, or will be diagnosed, with Autism Spectrum Disorder in West Virginia, alone. Our two youngest children found their way into these statistics at the age of 19-months and 6-years.
While enduring the tantrums consisting of self-injurious behaviors (SIBs), hours-long screaming fits, eating disorders, speech delay, and other medical conditions, we decided to learn how to help our children succeed anyway that we could. This lead Teri to pursuing a certification in behavior analysis.
Teri Hunley-Woolwine, MS, NCC, BCBA, President of ABC, Inc. and director of all operations, holds a Master’s Degree from Capella University in Mental Health Counseling and another in Applied Behavior Analysis. While training as a Licensed Professional Counselor, she pursued a second path in behavior analysis to aid her family in improving her son’s quality of life, as well as her family’s. She has 12 years of experience in the mental health field including children and adults as well as counseling a plethora of diagnoses, to include Autism Spectrum Disorder. Her husband is still serving as a 22-year veteran with the Army National Guard and works as a Federal Corrections Officer as well.
