Things like snoring, restless sleep,
mouth breathing or dark circles under the eyes are often dismissed as normal childhood habits.

These things seem harmless but may have bigger health implications. They are clues to how a child is breathing during sleep—and that can affect quality of sleep, jaw development and overall growth.

Do you notice mouth breathing at rest?
-Nasal Breathing may be difficult
-Tongue rests low in the mouth
-Body compensating for airflow

Over time this can affect jaw growth and oral posture.

Do you notice unusual sleep positions? Maybe your child is sleeping with:
-head tilted back
-neck extended
-on their stomach with their bottom up in the air

These positions are how the body tries to open the airway naturally.

Luckily, children are adaptable when we support healthy breathing and oral habits while they are growing!

Mouth Breathing Isn’t Just a Habit — It’s a Nervous System Issue

When you breathe through your mouth, your body reads it as a stress signal.

Mouth breathing activates the sympathetic nervous system — also known as fight or flight. This keeps the body in a constant state of alert instead of calm and repair.

Over time, this can contribute to fatigue, anxiety, inflammation, poor posture, and slower healing.

🌿 Nasal breathing = safety to the nervous system

Breathing through your nose activates the parasympathetic system (rest & digest). It allows:
✔️ Deeper oxygen delivery
✔️ Relaxed muscles
✔️ Better sleep quality
✔️ Improved focus & energy
✔️ Faster recovery

✨ Correcting mouth breathing can be life changing.

By retraining proper breathing patterns and supporting airway health, many people notice:
• Less stress & anxiety
• Better sleep
• Improved posture
• Reduced tension headaches
• More balanced energy

Your breath controls your nervous system — and your nervous system controls your health.

Breathe slow. Breathe deep. Breathe through your nose. 👃💙 www.heartlandmyo.com

If your child has trouble focusing or seems easily distracted, it might not be what you think.

Research shows that children who breathe through their mouth instead of their nose often experience restless sleep and lower oxygen levels.

When the brain doesn’t rest deeply at night, it has to work harder during the day to stay alert. The result can look a lot like inattention or hyperactivity.

Before assuming your child has a behavior or focus problem, it’s worth looking at how they breathe and sleep. Sometimes the solution isn’t about discipline or medication.

If your child mouth breathes, myofunctional therapy helps to address this. Reach out to see how we can help your child sleep better! www.heartlandmyo.com

If your child has had their tonsils or adenoids removed, you’ve probably been told the problem is solved. Breathing should get easier, sleep should improve, and you can finally relax.

BUT here’s something most parents aren’t told - creating more space in the airway doesn’t automatically create function. IF the muscles, tongue, and breathing patterns stay the same, the old symptoms often come back.

That’s why so many families still see mouth breathing, snoring, or sleep struggles after surgery, maybe even months later.

The space is there, but the body doesn’t know how to use it. This is where myofunctional therapy can help! We help retrain the brain and muscles HOW to function now that the obstacle of the tonsils and/or adenoids are out of the way!

Let me guess… you thought that would say “face.”
But your child’s mouth and facial muscles do so much more than just smile.

When these muscles aren’t working properly, it can impact their growth, airway, and long-term health.
They influence:
• Tooth decay risk, crowded teeth, and bite alignment
• Jaw growth and development
• Congestion, speech, and even focus
• Breathing, swallowing, and sleep quality

Muscles adapt to how they’re used—so dysfunction can lead to more dysfunction over time.
Myofunctional Therapy helps retrain these muscles to work the right way, supporting healthy function and development.

Are you ready to help shape your child’s future health?
We’re here to help. ❤️
