Small steps can make big changes in your skin’s health!
Avoiding these 6 skincare mistakes will help prevent future breakouts and slow down the aging process:
1. 💄Sleeping in makeup: It is SO important to cleanse once in the morning and DOUBLE CLEANSE before bed. The purpose of the first nighttime cleanse is to remove makeup/dirt/oil/pollution from the skin, while the second cleanse actually cleans the skin. Sleeping in makeup will not only age your skin, but will trap bacteria in the pores, leading to breakouts.
2. Putting droppers on the skin: Bacteria can easily be transferred from your skin to the dropper, contaminating the entire product. Opt for packaging that has a pump to reduce the risk of contamination 🦠
3. Makeup wipes: They do a great job of removing makeup, but they are TERRIBLE for your skin. The tugging on fragile under-eye skin can lead to wrinkles/laxity overtime, and the ingredients in these wipes can be pore clogging (even if they say acne safe!). If you MUST use a wipe, be sure to cleanse after to remove the wipe residue from your skin🧼
4. ☠️Overusing harsh topicals: Less is more. If you are using multiple acids, exfoliators and retinoids on the skin all together, your skin barrier can easily become compromised. Work with a skincare expert to determine which actives would be most beneficial for your unique skin, and which should be avoided.
5. 🪥Using toothpaste as a spot treatment: Just don’t. Please. 😂🫣 Sulfur is an amazing, natural spot treatment for breakouts- it reduces inflammation, kills bacteria, absorbs oil and gently exfoliates.
6. Performing at home extractions/picking at skin: Inflamed acne should NEVER be extracted, even by a skincare professional. Picking/popping inflamed pimples causes the bacteria trapped in the pore to spread under the skin, which can lead to more acne. Touching skin with dirty hands also will exacerbate acne, so leave the pimple popping to an expert!
Tip for managing inflamed acne at home- apply ice to the inflamed skin for 10-20 mins at a time, morning and night if possible. Ice will drastically and quickly reduce redness/inflammation/pain 🧊
