Last month Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones, offered important testimony to members of the U.S. Senate Aging Committee, and his message is relevant to anyone interested in health. Buettner noted that communities with the highest number of centenarians in the world are not focused on diet and exercise but rather on living a lifestyle and culture that already includes these things. (Read that carefully; he is not saying that diet and exercise are unimportant!)
"We tend to think that health is a result of a pursuit in this country -- but actually, it's a result of an environment that makes a healthy choice the easy choice."
In these communities, people don’t wear fitness watches or count how many calories have been burned while on the treadmill. Rather they walk a great deal every day, stay active, connect with people, and have a sense of purpose.
