June is Wound Healing Awareness Month! 👣

Doctors of Podiatric Medicine are experts in slow-to-heal wounds and diabetic foot ulcers.

Anyone who has diabetes can develop a foot ulcer. Ulcers form due to a combination of factors, including a lack of sensation in the foot, poor circulation, foot deformities, irritation (such as friction or pressure), trauma, and the duration of diabetes. These wounds can lead to complications, including infection and amputation.

The good news? If you have a foot ulcer, Doctors of Podiatric Medicine can help! Our members work every day to treat foot wounds, which reduces the risk of infection, reduces healthcare costs, and improves the quality of life for Ohioans. Thank you for all you do, OHFAMA members! 👣

It’s the season

With the colder temps often comes dry skin and in some cases, cracked heels. There are many potential causes of cracked heels, and, while dry skin (xerosis) a common cause, cracked heels can get worse with wearing open-back shoes, increased weight or increased friction from the back of shoes. Dry, cracked skin can also be a subtle sign of more significant problems, such as diabetes or loss of nerve function (autonomic neuropathy).

At-home remedies like moisturizer, foot soaks and exfoliation can often reverse the issue, but if these don’t work, you may need to see your foot and ankle specialist for evaluation to rule out fungal or bacteria involvement.

Foot ulcers develop in about 15 percent of the 25 million Americans living with diabetes. These ulcers can lead to serious complications, such as infection and amputation, and can also decrease the patient’s quality of life. Today’s advanced treatment of diabetic foot ulcers include innovative technologies that stimulate healing.

One groundbreaking approach that promotes healing is the use of bioengineered skin substitutes. Surgeons place these advanced biologics, which are made either from living or nonliving tissue, over the wound to accelerate growth of healthy skin.

Another advanced wound-healing technology is negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). This consists of a wound dressing, an air-tight film placed over the wound and a drainage tube connected to a suction device that draws excess fluid. The suction enables healthy new tissue to grow.
If you are living with diabetes, pay special attention to your feet, and if you have sores that will not heal, see a foot and ankle surgeon right away for the best treatment options.

Something as simple as a shoe can prevent diabetic amputations!!

Something as simple as a shoe can prevent diabetic amputations!!

Shoes for patients living with diabetes are made of special protective inserts and soft shoe materials to accommodate for conditions like neuropathy, poor circulation and foot deformities (bunions, hammertoes, etc.). The shoes decrease the chance of foot sores and ulcers, which can be caused by friction and pressure. This may lead to infection, gangrene or even amputation.

A foot and ankle surgeon can help find the shoes that are right for you, and in some cases may give a prescription to have the shoes custom made.
