Today's clinician topic wasn't about the Olympics, but was about the narrative we tell ourselves about ourselves... and how we can re-write it. Yes, not everyone is an Olympic athlete - some of us aren't even athletes, but we all face challenges and we all want to come out on the other side. Thanks Dr. Shank for keeping us abreast of new approaches so we can help our clients reach their own goals.
How often in life are we the underdog?
How often do we hear the words, "You can't do that. You don't have what it takes. You are not enough."
How often do we compare ourselves to others who are stronger, tougher, faster? More accomplished? Just, more.
How often do we succumb to what others say about your race, your goals, your life? If we're not in the hype, are we even in the race?
But there is nothing, and I mean nothing, that is stronger than an underdog who believes.
Just ask Cole Hocker, who shocked his competitors, the world, and even himself yesterday by winning the 1500m race in Olympic record time.
The hype before the race rarely mentioned Hocker. It was billed as a highly anticipated head-to-head between reigning Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway and world champion Josh Kerr of Great Britain. The bitter rivalry turned into something you'd see between two Hollywood starlets, and they were the two favorites for gold in a talented pool of runners.
In one of the biggest upsets of the Olympics, Hocker found his stride. In a race where Ingerbrigsten blocked him from passing in the last lap, Hocker never gave up. He eventually found daylight and surged past Kerr to claim Gold and the stadium went wild. My daughter and I went wild on our couch, too.
As a collegiate D3 runner who specializes in the 1500, and who also gets intimidated by competitors with faster times, I shouted, "Did you see that?! An Olympic record and three-second personal best! You define your own destiny. You never give up chasing your dreams!"
And although it was about racing, it wasn't about racing. I want her to know that she should live life how Cole Hocker ran that race. With grit. With fire. With determination, And with a focus on her abilities and no one else's.
We can never control how anyone else chooses to run their race in this life, but we can control how we choose to run ours.
You may be the underdog, but if you believe in yourself, if you work hard, if you trust your process, you can tear up the script that others created and write a new one for yourself.
And maybe even bring home a Gold.
Congrats to Cole and American Yared Nuguse for earning the Bronze. So well done.
