Our new Antibacterial Technology was featured in Orthopedics This Week!

This innovative technology is the first of its kind in orthopedics and yields an impressive 5 log kill rate. This means it can effectively eliminate bacteria that land on the implant in the OR at unprecedented levels, offering a significant advancement in orthopedic surgery.

Why This Matters

Efficacy: The antibacterial technology achieved a 5 log kill rate*
Patient Safety: Does not contribute to bacterial resistance
Innovation Track Record: Since 2015, we have been have delivering new product innovation to musculoskeletal oncology and complex orthopedics

What's Next?

We're eager to connect with orthopedic surgeons and staff who are interested in learning more about this groundbreaking technology and how you can access it.

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month!

Every July, we honor, celebrate, and amplify the Sarcoma community in support of this rare cancer. As we begin Sarcoma Awareness Month, here are some statistics about the disease, per the Sarcoma Foundation of America:

In recent year, sarcoma has comprised 1% of adult cancers diagnosed in the United States while also comprising 15 to 20% of childhood cancers.

Latest estimates show that 17,560 people in the United States will be diagnosed with sarcoma and ~220,000 patients and families are living with sarcoma in a given year.

There are so many ways to learn and get involved with this inspiring community! We can't wait to share more.

Bacterial contamination of implants is a problem. Even with advancements in contemporary operating room precautions, the problem persists.

Onkos has been granted FDA De Novo authorization for a groundbreaking technology that protects the implant from bacteria that deposit on its surface prior to implantation. This technology has been shown in pre-clinical studies to reduce bacterial load on the surface of an implant.

Additionally, preclinical testing demonstrated that the technology has not been shown to contribute to bacterial resistance.

Today marks a significant milestone, not just for Onkos Surgical, but for the orthopaedic industry as a whole!

We are proud and thrilled to announce that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has granted De Novo approval for a novel, antibacterial coated implant technology…the first of its kind in the U.S. orthopaedic market.

“Implant contamination is a growing concern to the orthopaedic surgical community,” said Steven Gitelis, MD, Onkos Surgical Chief Medical Officer, Rush Medical College Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Oncology, and Director, Musculoskeletal Oncology at Rush Cancer Center. “When bacteria contaminate the artificial joint, it can lead to a cascade of issues that can significantly impact the patient’s health. The current tools in our armamentarium are simply not enough to help solve this multifactorial problem.”

“When it comes to implant bacterial contamination and failure, patient complications may include decreased limb function, amputation, and increased rates of mortality…This exciting technology has the potential to be one of the most important advances in orthopedic medical devices in decades,” said Patrick Treacy, Onkos Surgical Founder and CEO.”

We look forward to sharing more in the coming days and weeks. Learn more about this pivotal announcement here: https://bit.ly/43SlYKL

Pelvic reconstruction for acetabular discontinuity can be a challenge – no two defects and no two patients are the same, and the approach can be present some angles that are difficult to reach. Specifically, inferior screw fixation has shown to be a helpful element in these procedures*…but the approach for those screws can be hard to plan for.

That’s why we have honed our My3D Pelvis offering to include a wide range of precise solutions, across our planning process, implant design, and surgical instrumentation. In this video, you can see how we heatmap the bone surfaces, align landmarks, and design the implant – all driven by our surgeons based on their needs and preferences.

Our 2024 Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellows Education Course is in the books, and we learned so much that we are carrying forward in our work. Thank you to all who made this course an impactful one!

Spanning case discussions, case debates, and lab practical, this course exists to support the latest fellows entering the specialty of musculoskeletal oncology, and even those who are focused on other complex conditions within arthroplasty and pediatrics. The faculty, fellows, and the MSTS fellowship institutions are near and dear to what we do - inspiring us to develop better solutions and to build educational forums that support the future of the specialty.

A special Thank You to this year's amazing faculty for a course that was steeped in building community and sharing memorable lessons and instruction. These things are possible because of your leadership!

Aseptic loosening is a leading cause of failure for oncologic endoprosthesis. Something that we keep at the forefront when advancing the designs in our ELEOS Limb Salvage System.

It is known that 3D-printed porous collar designs with HA treatments have shown the potential to help support osseointegration and reduce the chances for loosening.

The case below shows how our novel design supports extracortical bony bridging, a studied method in the literature for reducing aseptic loosening. Our BioGrip design combines a fully porous, 3D printed design with nanoHA that helps accelerate and enhance osseointegration.

Yet another example of bone-implant integration at 13 months, see for yourself below!

When you are deciding the best treatment option for your pediatric sarcoma patients, having an implant solution that fits both their growth and their broader treatment window is critical.

At Onkos, we understand the importance of reliable delivery to meet surgery dates within treatment windows, especially for sarcoma patients. With the JTS, we have dedicated tremendous resources and focused our efforts on reducing lead times and increasing consistency in delivery.

As of November, we have consistently reduced JTS lead times by more than 50%, from 16 weeks to 8 weeks or less. Every member of our team embodies dedication, pride, and expertise for the JTS and for this work, and we are grateful for them!
