Happy Valentine’s Day!
Self-care and self-love are frequently mentioned in the wellness industry. It is important because we need to make sure that our basic needs are met before we give our energy away to others.
When we are depleted, overburdened and over-taxed, we can become frustrated and caring for others then becomes burdensome and it is felt on both sides of the equation. Burnout and adrenal fatigue are real things.
The airline guidance of parents putting on their oxygen mask first and then putting it on their child is such an important metaphor for self-love and self-care first. It feels selfish to many who are natural care-takers, but it is actually more selfish to put others first because if you deplete yourself to the point of disease, in the end, others will have to take care of you!
We need to make sure that we are fed, cleaned, clothed, sheltered, exercised and that we get a good night of sleep. It’s so basic, but somehow our society has gotten so far off track and I find myself having to remind people to prioritize these very basic things regularly.
I hope that you are able to take good care of yourself today (and everyday!). Get yourself out in the sunshine, eat a nourishing meal, call a loved one and get some acupuncture.
