B𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴. H𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁.

Long before Pilates became mainstream, Kathy Grant was shaping its future.
A first-generation student of Joseph Pilates — and one of only two people formally certified by him in 1964 — she carried the work forward with strength, intelligence, and unmistakable presence.

Broadway dancer. Master teacher in the Dance Department at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts for decades. Studio owner inside Henri Bendel on Fifth Avenue.

When I studied with her in the early 2000s, what struck me most was her use of play.
She could take a familiar exercise and turn it into discovery. Unexpected imagery. Inventive props. Cues that reorganized the body in an instant.

Her creativity wasn’t decorative — it was exacting. It revealed new pathways without compromising the structure of the method.

She showed us that rigor and imagination belong together.
This is lineage. Many of us honor her today by teaching with depth, clarity, and intelligent play.
