Switching to a vegan diet can be unhealthy if you don't know what you're doing! "Vegan" living is a huge money maker right now and seemingly everyone is lining up to sell a vegan product. That said, it's important to understand that the true benefits of a vegan diet are hidden in real, whole, plant based foods...not processed trendy foods. If you are thinking of going vegan or plant based, it might be more helpful to think of it as a "whole food, plant based" diet. Those four words cover the basics of what I would consider to be required in order to make a plant based, (or vegan) diet work in the long run. Beyond that, it's just understanding a few nuances like protein, some B vitamins, vitamin D, and understanding your own, uniquely awesome metabolism and needs. Don't let diet trends and 'influencers' talk you into something you are not fully informed about. Get curious, learn the ropes...work with a good nutritionist who has your back...like me! 😁

Happy Monday! How is your mindset today? Are you feeling ahead of the many triggers, thoughts, and emotions that are coming your way? Or not so much? Having a few tools and strategies on hand, like taking deep breaths, doing a 'mind body scan,' or taking a short walk, can make a big difference in how you handle and respond to the stressors of your day.
Mindset plays a huge role in getting to those health and fitness goals, because your mind plays such a powerful role in your day to day choices and behaviors. With that, see if you can get cognitively ahead of the day's obstacles, so that when you have those unhelpful thoughts or feelings, you can give your mind and body what they need to cope.

I've observed in my nutrition & health coaching practice that many people are stuck in a Pandora's box of health and nutrition information. Most of this information is not really helping anyone, and probably leaving many confused and frustrated.

In my observation, our general perception of what it takes to create physiological change is not based in reality. With that, I have documented my 12+ year journey of healing, self-awareness, overcoming addiction, and transforming my health-- in order to demonstrate what it REALLY TAKES to change.

Guess what? Weight gain is sometimes optimal! Of course, it always depends on the person, their goals, and other factors. But suffice it to say that focusing on "weight loss" alone is not the smartest way to look at your body. Check out this case study that explains more about how we use body composition analysis in my coaching practice to give the client a better view into their own change process.

It's Foodie Friday! Yeah!
Here is a healthier twist on pudding- and this one is totally plant based for all you vegans and strictly plant based eaters out there! πŸ€—
You can turn this into a higher protein, vegetarian option by using Skyr or Greek yogurt and dairy milk in place of the soy yogurt and soy milk. Or, use whatever your favorite milk or milk substitute is, for that matter. I personally love the "Good Karma" flax milk, because it delivers 5g of protein for serving, with healthy fats from flaxseeds.
Remember to make these recipes your own by experimenting and having fun in the kitchen. Healthy doesn't have to be hard!

Guess what? Each and every person requires a slightly (and sometimes drastically) different amount of food in order to meet their unique body, activity levels and goals.
Learning how to understand your body and what it actually needs, and learning some basic skills that will allow you to manage and consume the right amount of food--- without restricting, feeling deprived, or following a dumb diet-- is one of the most basic, foundational skills we teach in nutrition coaching. The vast majority of my clients are able to eat in a calorie balance that supports their goals WITHOUT the need to use and app or count calories. How cool is that?
Give some of these tips a try, and if you'd like to learn more about this, feel free to look me up.
Healthy doesn't have to be hard. You've totally got this!

"Carbs are energy, not the enemy!" That's one of my favorite 'nutrition coach' sayings- haha!
It's true! Although dietary carbohydrates are not totally essential for survival (as has been pointed out numerous times by the paleo and keto diet theorists), carbs are your body's preferred source of go-to fuel. Enjoying just the right amount of your favorite, "smart carbs" each day is a great way to provide the perfect amount of needed fuel, while also learning how to enjoy carbs, not fear them!
What is your favorite carb? Do you perceive it as a "smart carb" healthy choice, or not so much? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!

Monday Mindset Check-In! Stop and check in with yourself right now, and ask yourself a few questions:
1) How are you feeling?
2) How are your thoughts affecting those feelings?
3) What can you do to reframe your thinking so that your feelings are more aligned with the kind of day you want to create and experience?
4) What is out of your control that you need to let go of?
5) What is in your control that you can do more of?
Self awareness is a fun and empowering skill to develop. If you've been feeling in a funk lately-- seemingly unable to pull off anything you want to accomplish-- I'd highly recommend doing a frequent 'mindset check in' with yourself.
You've totally got this! πŸ˜€
