Between finals, last minute projects, and the imminent summer freedom that feels just out of reach, it’s easy for your child to feel like they’re drowning in a sea of homework and anxiety.
Here are some tips to help your child finish the year strong, and keep their stress levels (and yours) under control:
1. Deep Breathing: It’s Like a Reset Button
When your child is starting to look like they might implode over a math test, remind them to take a deep breath. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 5 seconds, and exhale for 6 seconds. Repeat until they start looking human again. Bonus: This works for adults too.
2. Mindfulness, AKA “Chill Time”
Get your child to try some quick mindfulness exercises like coloring (without thinking about all the homework), listening to calm music, or just taking a short rest in favorite quiet, comfy place.
3. Breaks: It’s Not Laziness, It’s Strategy
You can’t expect your child to do 4 hours of work straight without a meltdown. Give them frequent breaks—the type that involve snacks, stretching, and maybe even a 5-minute dance party in the living room.
4. Celebrate the Little Wins
“Mom, I finished one math problem.”
“Woohoo!! You’re a superstar!”
Even the smallest victories deserve a mini-celebration. Whether it's tackling an assignment or just getting out of bed on time, praise goes a long way in easing stress.
5. Focus on the Fun Stuff
End-of-year stress can make kids forget that summer is literally right there. Remind them that after finals, there will be sun, fun, and a lot of sleeping in. So why not tackle these last few assignments like a warrior ready to claim their reward?
End-of-year stress is real, but you’ve got this. If your child’s stress seems like more than just the usual school scramble, we’re here to help.
