It's me. Hi. 👋 I'm the founder. It's me. 💁‍♀️

Maddie founded Elevated in March of 2020, just 3 days before the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic. While not always a master of timing, she has been a doctor of physical therapy since she graduated from the University of Maryland in 2016. Prior to that, she earned a bachelors of science in Kinesiology in 2013 from Penn State University (WE ARE!). After realizing that she spent a lot of her youth researching methods to improve performance and avoid injury for swimming, cross country, and track, she decided a career in physical therapy just made sense. She founded Elevated to create a space to utilize her skill set while working one-on-one with clients to help them achieve their goals. She's still a distance runner who will begrudgingly hop in the pool from time to time (& then always promptly remembers she indeed still does love swimming). She's always been a fan, but Midnights made her a .

By the looks of this photo, it's hard to believe there was ever a time when Tucker was worried about running! A testament to his hard work, this picture is actually from the very same race in Big Sky Montana that he had to scratch because of his injury. The Rut is a grueling 28k race through the mountains. He put in the work to recover, conquered those mountains (and several other running endeavors) and now he's gearing up for our favorite 🏃‍♂️

You were so much fun to work with Tucker! We'll be cheering you on in LA and beyond 😃

This week's spotlight is on Carolyn, colloquially known as your friend neighborhood scheduling dragon 🐉

Carolyn grew up in Texas but found her way to Los Angeles in 2016. She has a background in customer service and enjoys chatting so much people have a hard time believing she’s an introvert. When the opportunity arises she loves curling up with a good book or building a lego set in one go. She’s also been known to run around a block or practice olympic style lifting from time to time. She has a passion for flower markets and all things related to stationery and fountain pens. (The latter you’ll be able to see for yourself when you visit the office!) 🌸✒️🗒️

Meet Adam 😃

Adam grew up in Austin, TX and received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Texas State University and Bachelor of Sciences in Biology from the University of Alabama (ROLL TIDE ROLL). From an early age he had battling passions for music, playing piano and guitar, and for exercise and sports of all kinds, ranging from soccer, running, and basketball, to longboarding, TaeKwonDo, and parkour. His experience with sports-based exercise and fine motor control in music eventually led him to pursuing a career in physical therapy. Drawing from these experiences, Adam’s treatment style aims to blend a science backed approach of research based practices, with the art of personalizing each treatment session and exercise plan to individual client’s goals. These days Adam is an avid rock climber and snowboarder and is most often found at one of the many local climbing gyms and outdoor climbing destinations, or out on the slopes.

We are excited to welcome Adam to our Elevated team! 🏂🧗

TERMINOLOGY TUESDAY

⁉️What is tendinosis⁉️

🔸 Tendinosis describes damage to tendons. It is important to note that tendons have very little direct blood supply. Most of their nutritions comes for synovial fluid in their surrounding sheath. The cells that are in the synovial fluid and help to repair a tendon are called fibroblasts.

🔸 Your tendons are comprised of collagen fibers and elastin. When the tendon is damage, the collagen fiber content reduced and there is an increased volume of mucoid ground substance. The remaining fibers become randomly oriented, forming stiff scar tissue in your tendon. Because there is little blood supply, your tendons cannot as easily cry for help and call in the troops.

🤷🏻‍♀️ So what do we do when tendons are injured?

🧘🏻‍♀️ Relative rest! Not complete rest - this will just cause atrophy in other places. In other words, keep moving, but move less. Do low intensity exercise, cross train in ways that don’t cause pain, and/or even splint the area.

🏋🏻‍♀️ Low load, high reps: Start with low load & gradually increase it as tolerated. You want to go for 40-60 reps/day for 5-6 days a week to develop strength in the tendon. Rest can set you back.

🦵🏼 Eccentric Training: This type of exercise helps to organize your muscle fibers in parallel. This include exercises where your muscles are lengthening as you strengthen them. One of the best examples of this is the eccentric calf raise. Start with your feet half on a step. Lift up and slowly lower down until your heel is below the top of the step. This exercise force your calf muscles control your downward movement, thus developing strength as they lengthen.

🤒🤕 Have you suffered a tendon injury that just doesn’t seem to go away? Shoot me a message or let me know in the comments below! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Every other sport does drills before they start playing, practicing, or competing…🏌🏻‍♀️🤾🏽‍♂️🤸🏻‍♀️🏋🏻⛷

So why don’t we???🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏾🏃🏽‍♂️

Do you see a common theme among these drills??

They’re all biasing a single leg! 🦵🏼

Why??

Because running is a series of controlled single leg jumps/falls/whatever you want to call it!

🟠 When done correctly, these drills help to improve:
🔸 Strength
🔸 Proprioception
🔸 Overall stability

Of course, everyone is unique so these aren’t appropriate or necessary for everyone. That’s why it’s important to get assessed if you’re experiencing problems that are keeping you from your sport.

You should get an assessment if:
❌ Your injury creeps back in during your training.
❌ Your injury has never seemed to heal.
❌ You can’t go faster or longer without your form breaking down or bad pain.
❌ You’re sidelined from running completely 😞

Try these out & let me know how they go below!

It’s National Girls & Women in Sports Day!

This annual day of observance serves to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, recognize the influence of sports participation for women & girls, and honor progress & continued efforts!

A 2020 study found that 1 in 3 girls drop out of sports by their late teens. 😞 By comparison, the drop out rate for boys is 1 in 10.

🟠So how can we step it up for our girls?
🔸The same study found that when parents are active in sports, girls are 3 times more likely to also be active. (Check out my dad coaching us in pic 1️⃣)

🟠1 in 3 girls in the same study cited low self-confidence, negative body image, perceived lack of skill, & not being welcome as barriers.
🔸 This should be pretty obvious, but be welcoming, be helpful, encourage each other, & share excitement for these opportunities! (Hi in pic 3️⃣) 😊

Happy Lunar New Year!

This year is the Year of the Tiger 🐯

The tiger’s signs are strength, exorcising evils, & braveness!

Sounds like things we could all use after the last 2 years 🤪

A common theme I’m seeing among my new clients is so cool!

🔸 Reclaiming their fitness
🔸 Overcoming old aches & pains - even if it’s been years
🔸 Getting a handle on muscle imbalances to push their limits further

Everyone is bringing good energy & some bravery into this year & we are here for it!

How are you going to test your limits this year??

Shortly after every local race, a handful of people I speak with tell me they’d really love to be able to run 3-5 miles comfortably and wish they could check a half or even full marathon off the bucket list.

When someone tells me they haven’t run a half or full marathon yet, but want to, I admittedly get a little jealous! I’ve been lucky to run more than a few, but nothing compares to the first great race you have. There’s truly nothing like the first time you cross off a new distance - during training and while racing. I did my first 20 mile run in 2017 while training for the , and I still remember looking down at my feeling so accomplished. It’s so worth it to make this happen for yourself.

Typically, the thing that keeps most people from pursuing these distances is fear…

❌ Fear that their knee/ankle/hip won’t hold up
❌ Fear that they won’t be able to finish
❌ Fear of taking all that time involved with training for themselves
❌ Fear of the unknowns

There are ways to make all that easier!

✅ Get assessed your a professional who will analyze your gait, look at your mechanics, and build a plan to have you training well.
✅ Follow the training plan, learn how to fuel, and surround yourself with a team to help you cross that finish line.
✅ Remember it’s ok to “fill up your cup” to be the best version of yourself for your loved ones.
✅ Work with people who have been there & done it!

How much longer are you willing to hold yourself back?

You’ve done the work! Now what’s your best bet for minimizing stress tomorrow morning?

Set out what you need tonight! And, please, no surprises! Wear what you’ve trained in 😊

🔸Pin your race bib to your shirt, grab your bottoms, pick out your tried & true sports bra, and set them on top of your dresser.
🔸 Set out your trusted running shoes and socks.
🔸 If you’re taking on this race plugged, have your headphones and armband at the ready.
🔸 Get together any medications you’d normally take.
🔸 Make sure you have what you want for breakfast ready to go.
🔸 Have your fuel and hydration at the ready.

Text your training partner & remind them to do the same 😊🏃🏽‍♀️🏃🏾🏃🏽‍♂️

Send us a pic of your pre-race gear all ready to go! Good luck & Godspeed!!

A lot of us like to set goals, practices, or resolutions for the New Year.

But will you be able to keep yourself on track with the goals you’ve set? 🤔

That’s why it’s important to set S.M.A.R.T. goals 🤓

🔸Specific: Your goals should be focused and identify tangible outcomes. This will help keep you on track.
🔸 Measurable: There needs to be a clear measure of success. This will help you monitor your progress as well.
🔸Achievable: Your goals should be challenging but not impossible. I’m not saying you shouldn’t shoot for the moon, but setting too extreme of goals may set you up for disappointment. Make sure that with time & dedication, you can achieve what you set out to!
🔸Relevant: Get real with yourself and make sure you’re setting out to meet a challenge that aligns with your values & priorities. It has to be worthwhile to you!
🔸Timely: Every goal needs a target date to maintain focus. This will help you stay motivated and disciplined to achieve it.

One of my favorite goal-setting practices is to have tiers. For example, when training for a marathon, my first goal is always to finish without injury. My second goal is more challenging and usually time-based to beat my prior PB. My third “reach” goal is to go sub-4 hours! My first tier keeps me training responsibly, my second goal has me push it, and my reach goal keeps me motivated to see what’s possible 🏃🏽‍♀️

What goal-setting practices do you use?
