After recurrent miscarriage, many patients find themselves feeling overly cautious, unsure of what activities are “safe.” Dr. VanHise explains an important perspective: recurrent miscarriage is not typically related to a single activity or isolated action.

Clear information and thoughtful guidance can help patients feel more grounded as they navigate next steps. You don’t have to move through this alone.💙

Dr. Richard Paulson was recently featured on NPR’s LAist – AirTalk to discuss a wide range of questions surrounding fertility and family planning.

The conversation covered several important topics, including how fertility changes with age, what options are available for single individuals who want to preserve their ability to have children in the future, and when patients should consider fertility preservation before undergoing treatments such as chemotherapy.

Dr. Paulson, from our Pasadena office, explained that male fertility tends to remain stable longer than many people assume—s***m quality generally holds steady well into midlife, with only minimal average declines even past age 50. He also highlighted the growing accessibility of fertility-preservation strategies, from s***m and egg freezing to embryo banking, which can offer peace of mind for those planning ahead, whether due to medical treatments or personal circumstances.

The interview serves as a timely reminder that everyone’s reproductive timeline is unique—and that informed, science-based guidance can make all the difference in future family-building.

All jokes aside, we celebrate all great news here, whether we had something to do with it or not. A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a special type of X-ray to evaluate the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes as part of an infertility evaluation.

There are potentially two types of contrast media available for HSG, and the therapeutic effect of HSG is observed regardless of contrast type. However, studies have found that oil-based agents consistently yield superior fertility outcomes.

The mechanism is not fully understood but may involve mechanical flushing of debris or mucus plugs from the fallopian tubes. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), recognizes HSG as a first-line diagnostic and potentially therapeutic procedure for tubal infertility, noting higher fecundity rates for several months after tubal flushing, especially with oil-based contrast media.

Despite these findings, water-based contrast media is more commonly used due to its safety, lower costs, versatility, and improved formulations.

Does cold weather or winter stress actually mess with your hormones? Watch along to hear what Dr. Coffler has to say!

Your core reproductive hormones, like FSH and LH, are generally unaffected by the cold. However, less sunlight means less Vitamin D, which is scientifically linked to some aspects of your fertility.

The takeaway here is simple: The season itself doesn't cause infertility, but you need to proactively manage your stress, prioritize your sleep, and talk to your doctor about supplementing Vitamin D.

Stay cozy, and keep your health in check!
