With Houston’s record-setting population growth, the national nursing shortage has become a pressing local issue.

“At HCA Houston Healthcare, we are improving systems of care by advancing the future of nursing, right here in our city,” said Michelle Bookout, DNP, chief nursing executive for HCA Houston Healthcare. “This includes being proactive in addressing the growing nursing shortage by launching formal education programs to equip existing and future nurses with the skills they need to thrive in today’s dynamic healthcare landscape.”

Attracting nurses requires more than filling vacancies—it means creating an environment where they can grow and have influence.

? Nearly 1.2 million women in the U.S. give birth by cesarean section (C-section) each year – about one-third of all pregnancies, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

As a part of the American Medical Association’s What Doctors Wish Patients Knewℱ series, Dr. Cindy Celnik, assistant national medical director of Women’s Services for our broader HCA Healthcare network, shares helpful insights about C-sections – from when they’re medically necessary to how advancements are making recovery smoother.

Across HCA Healthcare hospitals, enhanced surgical recovery (ESR) protocols are helping improve outcomes for C-section patients by promoting faster healing, shorter hospital stays and reducing opioid use – all through evidence-based care.

While is often misperceived as a women’s disease, 1 in 726 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, says Dr. Ali Mazloom, a radiation oncologist with HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress.

"Most men don't think they can develop breast cancer," Dr. Mazloom notes. "So, when they get a nodule on their breast or start having signs that can be attributed to breast cancer, like ni**le discharge, they ignore it."

Jennifer Robinson was living her best life playing league tennis each week and making time for salsa dance lessons with her husband John when she began experiencing a tightness in her chest that occurred sporadically over a few weeks. As a CT X-Ray Technician at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood she knew the importance of getting the pains checked out quickly.

At the first evaluation, the physician suspected coronary artery blockage but found a leaking atrial valve instead. Jennifer was immediately referred to Dr. Uttam Tripathy, a cardiothoracic surgeon affiliated with our facility, where she was examined and diagnosed in a short amount of time. After also consulting with Dr. Mohamed Jeroudi, interventional cardiologist, Dr. Tripathy determined that Jennifer would require surgery to fix the leaking atrial valve.

"The process of my cardiothoracic surgery was a phenomenal experience from beginning to end, with the best possible healthcare team," said Jennifer. "I am absolutely convinced that it was divine intervention which led me to Dr. Tripathy, Dr. Jeroudi and the outstanding cardiology support team, ICU and CCU RN's, lab, radiology, and lastly, therapy."

Immediately following surgery, physical therapy was required to get the heart and body back in motion - a process Jennifer called 'painful, yet positive'. Upon release from the hospital, Jennifer was able to continue an additional 10 weeks of cardia rehabilitation at her home hospital with a goal of extended walking on a treadmill. Now months after the surgery Jennifer and John have returned to salsa dancing and the tennis courts are next.

With national awards for our heart and vascular care, we proudly offer residents of southeast Harris County a heart failure management program, and a multi-specialty clinic for cardiac surgery and a cardiac rehabilitation program. Whether you need emergency care, preventive treatments, expert diagnoses or surgical solutions, we're here for you. https://bit.ly/4o6PS78

screening looks different at every age. Experts recommend that you start talking with your doctor about your personal risk of breast cancer as early as age 25. Depending on your family history or other factors, you may qualify for genetic counseling, earlier screening or both.

If you have a higher risk of breast cancer, screening may begin as early as age 30, or 10 years before the age a close relative was diagnosed. Because each person’s health needs are unique, it’s important to talk with your doctor about a personalized approach to screening.

Organizations that set medical screening guidelines now universally recommend starting mammogram screening at age 40 if you have an average risk of breast cancer. Across our broader HCA Healthcare network, caregivers perform approximately 1.5 million mammograms each year, helping patients take proactive steps toward early detection and better outcomes. If it’s time to schedule your next mammogram visit https://bit.ly/46ZWbT4.

About every three minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with blood cancer, according to Blood Cancer United. Learn about the main types of blood cancer and common symptoms from Dr. Navneet Majhail – a hematologist and physician in chief of blood cancers for the HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Cancer Network.

As a part of HCA Healthcare, we give our patients healthier tomorrows through access to a connected oncology network, including 11 blood cancer treatment programs that make up the Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network. Because we empower new mothers to create the birth experience they desire, midwives play a vital role in the pregnancy and birthing options available through our Women's Care Centers.
