Facial paralysis following tumor removal requires a comprehensive and time-sensitive approach.

In this case, a staged nerve transfer procedure was performed approximately 8 months after a total parotidectomy left this 78-year-old professional jazz trumpet player with complete paralysis on the right side of his face.

A “babysitter” procedure was used to transfer the nerve to the masseter muscle to the facial nerve, while a long nerve graft from the leg was simultaneously utilized to help restore critical facial functions such as eye closure and mouth movement.

At 3 years post-procedure, improvements in facial movement, mouth function, and eye closure are evident. While mild weakness remains, he has been able to return to playing the trumpet and performing in front of an audience. Attention to timing and surgical precision is what allows functional outcomes like this to be possible.

“Stop searching for your doctor, you found him, he is Dr. Panossian. I was so extremely happy that I found Dr. Panossian to do my nose surgery. I did a lot of searching to try to find the right doctor who did rhinoplasty and very happy that I was able to find Dr. Panossian. I wanted to pick a doctor who did lots of noses and nose surgeries and Dr. Panossian specializes not only in no surgeries but very complicated facial surgeries so he is excellent at what he does and an extremely skilled physician and surgeon. I was born was a very big and wide ethnic nose that hooked when I smiled and I had a terrible side profile which I always hated. And watching videos and looking at all of the photos, I felt Dr. Panossian did an excellent job making ethnic noses beautiful but still natural looking. Dr. Panossian is a wonderful doctor. He is smart, knowledgeable, and more than anything, he is really a human being and you really get the feeling with him that he genuinely cares about you and wants to do a good job and wants you to be happy with the end result. As soon as I met him, within seconds I knew I had absolutely picked the right doctor for my nose surgery. One of the things that I learned Dr. Panossian does differently from the other well-known rhinoplasty surgeons in the area is that he does a closed nose surgery meeting, he does not cut up the entire bottom of your nose and you do not have a big scar and the healing time is much faster and the recovery time is much faster.
