Last spring, actor Halle Berry made headlines when she boldly shouted, “I’m in menopause!” outside the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., challenging the silence that has long surrounded this inevitable life stage for women.

Her declaration is a part of a broader cultural shift, where women are beginning to push back against the stigma and shame that has historically defined menopause. As these conversations gain momentum, they reveal just how little we understand this phase of life, which begins for approximately 6,000 women each day, or 1.3 million women annually in the U.S.

There are an estimated 55 million women in menopause in the United States today, the majority of whom endure its most debilitating symptoms in silence. A poorly done study from over 20 years ago haunts us still. Many cardiologists, internal medicine, and family practice providers still view hormone therapy as dangerous, despite 20 years of progress in terms of new research, new data, new studies, and a growing consensus of opinions from a multitude of women's health organizations about how the benefits usually far outweigh the risks for hormone therapy for women suffering from severe menopause symptoms. There is no such thing as a risk-free hormone and yet female hormones are constantly thought of as all risk and no benefit and this is not true. The hormone choice takes place one patient at a time. Find a hormone specialist, not a guru, not an herbalist, not a nutritionist (whatever that is). Find an educated women's medical healthcare provider such as a physician, PA or NP who can see the big picture and help you make a decision based on science and quality of life, and not based on the latest supplement or social media post from a celebrity.

The government should spread information about and expand access to hormone therapy, the best option for most of the 55 million Americans in menopause.

The multi-billion dollar health and wellness industry manipulates us to waste money by using celebrities and pseudo-science to promote unfounded, unproven and potentially dangerous health treatments.
Va**nal steaming, re**al ozone, vaginal jade eggs, coffee enemas, and anti-anxiety skin patches are all hogwash and in many cases cause actual HARM!
