Back to school time can be hard on kids and parents alike. One particular time can be the after school hours. Kids have been stimulated all day and holding it together, and parents are eager to know about their days, sometimes bombarding them with too many questions and not getting a response. Here are 3 tips to help kids in the after-school hours...
1. Give them time and space to decompress. If they have been holding it together all day, chances are, behaviors or big emotions will start to arise after school once they are back in their safe space.
2. Rather than bombarding them about their day, share something about your day to encourage them to share. For example, sharing what you had for lunch, or something you accomplished. Pause, it is okay if they do not give a response.
3. Give them the option to respond with a symbol instead... thumbs up or thumbs down.
