This April, May and June, the Chesapeake Life Center is offering a variety of opportunities for adults who are grieving to gather, reflect and support one another.

Whether you connect through nature, creativity or conversation, there’s something for you this season:

🐾 Pet Loss Workshop – Honor the special bond you shared with your beloved companion and connect with others who understand how deep that loss can be.

📚 Virtual Book Group: "The Pilot’s Wife" – Join others online for thoughtful conversation about this powerful novel and the themes of love, loss and resilience it explores.

🌳 Nature-informed workshops – Step outside and experience the calming, restorative power of nature while exploring grief and renewal alongside others.

You don’t have to navigate grief alone. Sometimes healing begins simply by showing up and sharing space with others who understand.

Assisted living teams do incredible work every day. As new Maryland assisted living regulations raise the bar for quality and safety, having the right clinical partners can make a real difference for both residents and staff.

Our latest issue of The Referral explores how hospice and assisted living teams can work together to support residents, families and care teams while also helping facilities meet evolving regulatory expectations. Hospice partnerships can provide clinical backup, symptom management support, staff education and guidance that helps teams confidently navigate complex care needs.

Inside this issue, you’ll also find practical tips for recognizing when it may be time to start hospice conversations and simple ways to introduce hospice as an added layer of support for residents who wish to remain in the place they call home.

Take a few minutes to explore the latest The Referral and see how partnership can strengthen care for residents while supporting your team.

During National Social Work Month, we’re proud to celebrate the compassionate professionals who are there for our patients and families during some of life’s most difficult moments. 💙

In his blog, hospice social worker Steven Watson, LCSW-C, APHSW-C, shares how social workers support families caring for loved ones with dementia. Read more here: https://www.hospicechesapeake.org/2025/08/social-workers-are-invaluable-partners-in-dementia-caregiving/

From helping caregivers navigate complex family dynamics to connecting them with resources and offering a steady, compassionate presence, social workers are often the guide families didn’t know they needed. As Steven writes, they help caregivers balance their own well-being while ensuring their loved one receives compassionate, coordinated care.

This month, we celebrate Steven and all of our hospice social workers who advocate, listen and stand beside families every step of the journey. Their work reminds us that no one has to face serious illness alone.

Thank you for all you do.

During Patient Safety Awareness Week, we’re recognizing the partnerships that help keep patients safe, comfortable, and supported every day.

Our work doesn’t happen in isolation. We’re grateful to collaborate closely with the dedicated teams in assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing communities who care for our patients with compassion and vigilance. Together, we share information, coordinate care and respond quickly to changes so residents receive the right support at the right time.

We’re also deeply grateful for our own care team members and the family caregivers who are such an important part of each patient’s care. So many people work together to help ensure safety, comfort and dignity.

These partnerships create stronger care, smoother transitions and peace of mind for families. Patient safety is always a team effort.

Today is National Employee Appreciation Day, and we’re reflecting on the many heartfelt notes and messages we receive from the families we serve. 💙

Again and again, families share words of gratitude for the compassion, kindness and comfort they experienced during some of life’s most difficult moments. Those beautiful messages exist because of the extraordinary people on our team—our clinical, administrative and support staff—who show up each day with empathy, dedication and heart.

To our team members: you inspire these powerful expressions of thanks, and we are deeply grateful for the care you bring to every patient and family.

During National Social Work Month, we’re proud to highlight the many meaningful roles social workers play in hospice, supportive and grief care. 💙

At the Chesapeake Life Center, Christa Martin, LCSW-C, is known for creating unique and engaging programs that help families cope with grief in ways that feel safe and approachable. From table-top role-playing games and bingo to grief karaoke and individual play therapy, she reminds us that the hard work of grieving can feel a little lighter when children — and adults — are given permission to have fun.

Play isn’t a distraction from grief. It’s a pathway through it.

We are grateful for Christa and all of our Chesapeake Life Center social workers who walk alongside families every day with compassion, creativity and heart.

Christa wrote about why play is so important in helping children live with loss in this blog:
https://www.hospicechesapeake.org/2026/03/when-it-comes-to-grief-for-children-the-play-is-the-thing/

Sometimes, the most meaningful response to grief is simply listening and letting a child return to play when they’re ready.

Some people are simply called to this work. Karen Fitzgerald is one of them.

After nearly two decades in hospital nursing, Karen joined Hospice of the Chesapeake nine years ago and, as she says, “truly fell in love with the work.” Since then, she has served in multiple roles, helping train others and walking alongside countless families with compassion and grace.

We’re so grateful for Karen’s heart, her experience and her steady presence for the families we serve.

Watch her spotlight and help us celebrate her in the comments below.
