March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, and Sandbox Family Services is raising awareness about the importance of inclusion for children, adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities, and celebrating the unique strengths and vital contributions of these individuals. Early intervention is extremely important. Our infant mental health department supports children 0-5 with reaching developmental delays.

Babies hold implicit memories in their nervous system and body even if they can’t visually or verbally remember what happened with a narrative story.

Examples of early childhood trauma:

Traumatic birth experiences

Separation from biological parents

Domestic abuse

Neglect / lack of caretaking

Natural disasters

Accidents / injuries

Surgery

Divorce

And many others.

When we acknowledge the trauma that happens in early childhood, we can initiate the healing process and support children through recovery.

Don’t gloss over it. Perhaps that’s easier for the adults in the short term, but it invalidates the child’s experience and retraumatizes the child.

Some of us love our family and just like we love them, some of us don’t always like them. There are also some of us that might not have positive feelings about them at all. And all of that is okay. Regardless of your relationship with your family this time of year can be very stressful because for many of us it’s the only time we see our extended family. While this can result in joy and feelings of belonging, this also can be very stressful and emotionally distress.

Perhaps you and your family have different political opinions or they don’t accept you for who you are. Whatever it is, you are not alone 🙏🏼

You know how people say, “running is my therapy,” or “yoga is my therapy” or “wine is my therapy?”

Today, a loving reminder that actual therapy is really good therapy.

Being alive is such a gift...AND ALSO most of us are facing some very real challenges: the end of a relationship or the struggle of addiction, the loss of a family member or a crisis of faith—and the stories that we tell ourselves about these events are crucially important for our mental health.

Our culture does a few things really well: celebration, happiness, achievement, beginnings.

What we don’t yet do well, culturally: grief, struggle, loss, endings. We don’t know what to do with our badly broken hearts, crushed expectations, searing losses, raging grief.

Therapy helps build a safe container to hold all those wiggly, scary things we’ve been taught to ignore—and you know they won’t be ignored & they’ll find their way out sometime.

How to find a good therapist: word of mouth. Ask people in your life who seem to have a decent handle on their own mental health—chances are they have a good therapist.

And asking about it is valuable in another way: it normalizes therapy, which is important.

We’re not responsible for what happened to us, but we are absolutely responsible for what we do with our pain.

Therapy, like almost every good thing: hard but worth it.

Make the appointment. :)❤️
