âHow could you possibly teach anyone how to latch with zero personal experience?â
Itâs a question I can sense on all of my clientsâ minds, though youâre all polite enough not to ask it out loud đ
When clients ask whether I have kids, theyâre surprised to hear that I donât have kiddos of my own (yet). Because breastfeeding can feel like such an intense and personal journey, itâs understandable to wonder how someone who hasnât experienced it themselves can really get it. Hereâs how I do:
â Trial and error is my jam. I love figuring out what *doesnât* work, just as much as what does (and why). Ten years in and hundreds of families later, Iâve built a pretty thick handbook of what NOT to do. I use those cheat codes to help you speed up your learning curve.
â Iâm great at spotting patterns and subtle body language expressionsâlike noticing how everyoneâs breath always hitches and their toes scrunch up when a baby latches with their head tilted a certain way (ânote to self: that head angle = painful latchâ)
â Through deep listening, careful observation, and asking the right questions, I build a mental map to help me understand exactly whatâs happening. From there, I can create a clear picture of what you and your baby need, and together we make the adjustments that can get you where you want to go.
âLastly, I have a knack for explaining things in a way that clicksâwhether itâs through creating analogies, guiding your hands to show you exactly what to do, or making a fool of myself while acting it out. (check that last photo for a demonstration đ)
So, while I havenât gotten to breastfeed my own babies yet, I *have* invested a crazy amount of time, thought, and detailed effort into learning how it works. Youâre in excellent hands with me (and our whole lactation team at New North). You can do this, and weâre here to lead the way. đ
