I have had the pleasure of having Uncle Ned as my uncle for 43 years. Probably the most unselfish human I have ever met. He was always one step ahead of everyone and it has always done things his way. He was the decision maker in our family and we often referred to him as “the man.” As a little kid, he was the mysterious uncle always wearing a suit who would hand out candy to his nieces and nephews at 930pm right before our parents drove us home. Looking back now as a parent, he clearly wanted to have the last laugh with his siblings on those nights. As I got older, I began noticing how unique and interesting he was. Every Christmas, he would make sure he was with our family during our annual celebrations. Even if that meant traveling by airplane. Which we all know he favored the train. One year, we celebrated him our family Christmas in Aspen, Colorado. I will never forget Uncle Ned riding the gondola in his suit with special snow traction shoe coverings over his dress shoes to have lunch and take a photo with his family. Family was a big part of him and he was always willing to make time for us. I could go on and on with stories about him, as I’m sure many of you can as well. Our Uncle Ned didn’t want a funeral- in lieu of gifts or donations to charities, sharing stories or photos of Dr Ned Sutro would mean a great deal to us. Next time you see the Amtrak, or someone eating dessert before a meal, or someone wearing a suit at a college football game, think of Ned. As the unselfish person he was, that’s all he would ask.
