ACTIVITIES

I am passionate about providing help in areas of the world experiencing high need for trauma-informed treatment and low resources. I have lived and worked in poor/low-resourced communities throughout my adult life working in the Child Welfare arena and Community Mental Health programs. I sit on the board of Breakout, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing access to trauma-focused care in high-need/low-resource communities throughout the world. My international fieldwork includes working with school children in India, as well as Rohingya (Rakhine state, Myanmar) refugees in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazaar (and the staff of organizations assisting people in the Rohingya refugee camps.) When not doing trauma work, I can be found watching wildlife near my home, woodworking, enjoying my family, or exercising by playing Ultimate Frisbee (some call me a fanatic!)

To my mental health colleagues –
We are moving ahead with a modified plan to provide a (FREE!) ASSYST training and Community Event! I’m very pleased about how things have turned out, and I hope you will consider taking part in this effort to help Los Angeles County friends & neighbors.

I want to add a brief explanation of why I’m so bent on doing this, given that I now live 500 miles away in Northern California. It’s very simple – I LOVE you all, and you’ve been a part of my entire adult life, since college (Oxy ’86 – “Io Triumphe!”), working in the LA area, grad school at Fuller, life and ministry in NW Pasadena and ordination at Altadena Baptist Church (yes – it’s gone. Well, the building is.) I’ve worked with Olive Crest, Bienvenidos, Hathaway, Optimist, and Sycamores, and I have had a private practice in Pasadena. I’m tied to this community. Not the least of my heart ache is from knowing at least 25 friends, both casual and dear, who have no homes now.

So, here’s a hi-level summary of what’s happening, and links/flyers to help support your involvement and getting the word out to the community:

TRAINING
Training will be ONLINE through Zoom (not in-person in Orange County, as originally thought).
Training will be on TWO ½-days in the mornings, 9am to 12:30pm, February 6-7 (Thursday/Friday).
Training will be conducted by the ASSYST developer, Dr. Ignacio “Nacho” Jarero, Ph.D., and Nicolle Mainthow, LMFT.
The training and the Community Event will be held in English.
We ask that you commit to the full training AND to the one-day Community Event in Highland Park (just the one site) on the following day, Saturday, February 8th.
An additional QnA meeting will be available to all trainees and a date that is still TBD. 😊
BELOW IS A FLYER FOR THE TRAINING. YOU CAN USE THE QR CODE ON THE FLYER TO REGISTER.

COMMUNITY EVENT
We will start with a brief Team Meeting – all ASSYST Trainees at 8am and will end with a post-group debrief no later than 5pm.
Site of the Event will be Sycamores, 840 N. Avenue 66, Los Angeles, CA 90042

Training and Event sponsored by the ASSYST-Heart Humanitarian Project, Ebymac Therapy and Sycamores.

I hope you will consider joining this opportunity to care for the many people who are still suffering from the fires.

A note from an important EMDR mentor - Dr. Ignacio (Nacho) Jarero...

Dear EMDR colleagues:

I extend you a warm invitation to read the paper titled “Psychological Group Interventions for Reducing Distress Symptoms in Healthcare Workers: A Systematic Review.”
https://tinyurl.com/2ctfwvbm

Their search returned 1,071 randomized trials, of which only 23 met the inclusion criteria, and only one was on EMDR therapy; it was a study about the EMDR Integrative Group Treatment Protocol for Ongoing Traumatic Stress Online. You can read the study following the link https://tinyurl.com/yhqsm9ee

According to the authors, our EMDR therapy study demonstrated a robust design and ex*****on that minimized the risk of bias in critical areas such as randomization, handling of missing data, and outcome measurements, allowing them to interpret the results reliably.

On page 10, the authors stated: “In addition, the study of online formats and their possible application, as explored with EMDR, suggests a promising avenue for expanding access to effective interventions by allowing access to many workers and reducing physical and temporal constraints.”

Butterfly Hugs.

Ignacio (Nacho) Jarero.

Hope, Reflection, Healing

Nothing brings me greater joy than to watch healing happen, and to see people feel free to live fully, and to love generously. Traumatic experience leave us stuck, with pain and fear guiding our thoughts and actions. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) is an Evidence-Based Practice that utilizes the innate capacity of the human brain to process experiences in an adaptive and integrative fashion, to transform the impact of disturbing and painful events into an integral, confident and powerful approach to life.

If you are experiencing stress, anxiety, nightmares, depression, hopelessness, or the inability to concentrate or stop thinking about distressing events in your life - there is hope and healing available to you. Call to explore what you can do to get relief, feel better and get moving forward with a joy-filled life.
