Founded more than 65 years ago by a small group of Quaker families, Pacific Oaks College is dedicated to the fundamental Quaker principles of inclusion, social justice, and the valuing of every human being. The institution is known and recognized for its pioneering efforts to reduce bias within our nation's education system, and for equipping graduates with the skills they need to help people from diverse backgrounds, learning styles, and strengths uncover and realize their unique individual potentials. Pacific Oaks is known for its progressive approach to learning—valuing real-world experiences as well as academic achievements. This philosophy is embodied through opportunities such as the Credit for Life Experience option, which allows students to gain academic credit for real-world experience acquired in the workplace. Students may earn up to 24 credits in this manner—credits which can be applied toward a bachelor's degree and count toward application for an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy or Human Development. Three basic concepts underlie the educational philosophy at Pacific Oaks:
•that every individual has a fundamental worth;
•that growth is a dynamic and life-long process;
•and that every individual has a unique identity and human potential. Pacific Oaks is accredited by the WASC Senior Colleges and Universities Commission (WSCUC), and has been since 1959.

Our community gathered on our patio courtyard—to honor the life, legacy, and impact of Leanne Wruck, Ph.D. Her time with us as Interim President as well as in her role as Chief Academic Officer at The Community Solution Education System left a deep and lasting impact on both our College and the Children’s School.

We planted a lemon tree, one of Dr. Wruck's favorite California-grown fruits, alongside a commemorative plaque. All who worked with her benefitted from her profound dedication to transformative education, student success, and inclusive leadership.

As students, faculty, staff, and visitors arrive on campus, the tree will be there to welcome them. May it be a symbol of all she helped nurture and grow here at Pacific Oaks. Her legacy will forever be rooted in the spirit of our College and Children's School.

As millions of children head back to school, children, parents, and teachers are hoping for a smooth and successful start to the school year. For young learners, especially those starting kindergarten, the adjustment to a full day in the classroom and changes to their daily routine can bring a host of new feelings and experiences. Our very own, Yolanda Carlos, M.Ed., early childhood education core faculty, shares some emotional regulation strategies with Education Week. Download & share: https://ow.ly/8Fa250WIwf7

Today we welcomed the Child Care Alliance of Los Angeles and more than 60 attendees convening to examine the food security needs of home-based childcare providers in Los Angeles.

We’re grateful for the commitment of organizations like the L.A. Food Policy Council, WIC, Department of Child and Family Services, the Executive Office of the Board of Supervisors, Child Care Resource Center, First 5 LA, and Options for Learning and we’re proud to be a resource to organizations advancing the issues that matter.

The teenage years are full of firsts, growing independence, and big decisions. But they also come with emotional ups and downs that can, at times, feel overwhelming for both the teenager experiencing them and the parent working to support them. Dive deeper with Pacific Oaks alumnus and faculty Andrew Kami, Ph.D., in this new Parents Magazine article:

Teens often hide their emotions around friends to fit in or avoid being judged. But suppressing emotions can have devastating mental health consequences. Here, experts explain what expressive suppression is, the role of peer influence, the signs to look for, and how to help.

We earned our Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 2020 to expand educational opportunities for Hispanic students, a demographic that makes up more than half of Pacific Oaks’ student body. Since then, we've used the funds to establish and grow our Student Success Center (SSC), support students’ evolving needs during and in the wake of a global pandemic, and strengthen our community. Discover more about the grant and its impact, from Title V Project Director Judy Castro, Ed.D., here:

The HSI grant endowment has led to major improvements for Pacific Oaks students. Donor contributions are the key to its success.
