KINDS OF RECKLESS

โ€œWorth noting that thereโ€™s no โ€˜wโ€™ in reckless. We imagine there might be, since a wreck is entirely possible.

Thereโ€™s the recklessness of creative generosity. This happens when we show up with our best work, regardless of how it might feel if it doesnโ€™t land with the desired audience.

The recklessness of financial abandon. No budgets, no backup plans. This can feel like commitment, but itโ€™s often a trap.

The recklessness of connection. When we stop holding back and find someone (or something) that is worth our full focus, attention and commitment.

The recklessness of being in love.

The recklessness of radical honesty. When we choose to speak our deepest truths, knowing they might backfire, and yet itโ€™s still worth it.

The recklessness of unlearning. When we deliberately dismantle our carefully constructed expertise and certainties to make space for new ways of seeing and being.

The recklessness of solitude. When we step away from the constant hum of connection and productivity, daring to sit with ourselves in complete silence.

And the recklessness of joy. When we allow ourselves to feel and express unbridled delight in a world that often expects measured restraint and cynical distance.โ€

Some sobering data about how our retreat into doing more of our daily tasks and interactions online instead of out in our communities has decreased the number of words we actually speak to other humans by 20% DAILY over the last several years.

The less we interact with our neighbors, the less we feel a part of our communities, and the more isolated and lonely and disengaged we are. Fewer in person interactions also creates potential to breed more distrust and more divisiveness, as more people feel like strangers than neighbors.

Itโ€™s worth thinking what small steps we can do to engage more in our lives offline ๐Ÿ’“๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

A new study suggests that people are losing 338 spoken words every year and have been for at least a decade and a half.

We are all poorer for not having meaningful policy debates regularly in our public forums. Solving complex problems requires serious expertise from serious people, covered thoughtfully and well by the fourth estate.

"These findings suggest that politicians are using the attacks as a strategy to become part of the national political debate..."
