An amazing story of recovery, determination, and teamwork! Linda, who stayed with us at Avalon Health and Rehabilitation Center Pasco, was featured in our therapy partner Reliant Rehabilitation's Care Matters Spotlight!
Read her story below:
Linda arrived at Avalon Health and Rehabilitation Center Pasco following a stroke that significantly impacted the right side of her body (her dominant side). Prior to this medical event, she lived an independent life, finding joy in playing the piano at her local church and tending to her beloved garden.
Upon her arrival, Linda required total assistance for all bed mobility and activities of daily living (ADLs). Communication was also a major challenge, as she experienced expressive aphasia, making it difficult for her to speak beyond a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. Despite these challenges, she remained determined to regain her independence, drawing strength from her therapy team. Linda bonded closely with Jenae, PTA (pictured here) who became one of her biggest sources of encouragement, helping her achieve goals of standing and more independent transfers.
Through perseverance and hard work, Linda has made incredible strides, and her progress has been nothing short of inspiring. She can now confidently communicate in full sentences and express all of her needs and has regained the ability to swallow safely and feed herself. She is also performing all of her ADLs with minimal assistance and can complete stand-pivot transfers with only contact guard assist. Beyond her own recovery, she has become a source of motivation for other patients, consistently encouraging them to keep pushing forward and to not give up.
Linda’s journey is a true testament to resilience, hard work, and the power of unwavering support. She has now returned home with her husband where she can continue to return to the life she loves with her eyes on playing the piano at church in the near future.
